Game improvement

Thats a mental thing for me. If you are just off the green with little green to work with you can just poke at it with a wedge. Play to get it just past the hole and commit to the shot.

Stop looking at it as a must get down in two to a I can get this in. If you manage that then you will always get down in 2 if not one!

I always struggle with whether I should open the clubface a touch for the shot and also some people say play it from the middle of your stance, others say a bit further back etc etc.

Good point regarding mentally trying to hole it, I'm thinking don't gun it 30 yards , just get it on the green and make nothing worse than a bogey.

I think it's the physical side of things. I've got a pretty good swing but I'm weak in certain areas which means I lose balance and control. A strength and conditioning programme would revolutionise my game massively.

The other thing would be little tests like the Par 18 short game one. Anything that can make my practice more like a simulation of a round would be great.

Hi everyone,

I am looking for a little feedback and your thoughts on your game.

If you could improve one area of your game, what would it be and how do you think you would go about it?

at the moment, driving... it used to be the best part of my game now the worst, also add 50 yards off the tee and be in the middle of the fairway

Irons from 100-175 yards.
I'm just not accurate enough, simple as that. Need to get closer to the pin more often.
Used to be an strong part of my game but it's fallen away recently
Driving , as always......

Where you play it from and whether to open the face depends on what you are comfortable with. It's the same as whether to always use the same club when chip and adapt the shot or to use different clubs but the same swing. It's what works for you. I am very comfortable opening the face on my wedge but it is not the shot I would play from that position. Just adds another variable. For me this is about just getting the ball on the green. If it's a close pin a jab will get you on and running. If you are trying to get it in then it should get close. If it's over a lot of rough first it's open the face up and try and get it to land quick.

Regarding mental golf- you need to remove all negative shots from your brain before you swing. Focus on what you want to do, no what you fear doing. Focus on getting it in. I read once that you should be trying to make every shot on or around the green. If your aim is the hole and you miss by 4 foot you are left with a 4 footer for par. If you aim to get within 6 foot and you miss by 4 foot you have a 10 footer for par. Then accept the result and play the next shot. Get into that way of thinking and you will see improvements.

Chipping, but where can you practice in winter, especially like the one we are having?
I am convinced that if I could improve my chipping and ensure I could hit the green with an 8 iron and up, my handicap would tumble.

As some have said already, 20-70 yard pitches.... Would rather be 100 yards out than 60....
Another thing is alignment. I have gone though the pick a spot 10 yards in front and align to that, I think my shoulders point one way and my hips another. Especially when I aim left....

B) Nobody hits the green all the time inside 8 iron distance, you may be being too hard on yourself with that one.

Thanks for all the replies, seems like most of you are thinking short game, which is what I have expected. I am looking at putting something fun together to try and help all areas of the game, but I will probably start with the short game. I'll keep everyone updated.
