hi there, ive been playing on and off for about 12 years,or should i say hacking around various courses in cumbria.ive always enjoyed a round of golf even if ive never been much good.played at courses such as keswick, stoneyholme(carlisle municipal),brampton, langholm, crooke, and many more 9 holers.so this year i decided to take it a bit more seriously and join a golf club.and get a handicap and play comps etc.so ive joined a lovely club at appleby. luckily got my membership this year and have played several rounds.ive been shooting around the 100 mark and steadily becoming more confident as i play more.my clubs are an old set of regency limited edition irons which i bought new about 10 years ago,so i thought a new set would improve my game just that bit more to get up to handicap standard.so ive got myself a set of wilson staff Di9 irons and they arrived yesterday morning.so that was it then, i was dying to try them out and duly went for my saturday afternoon game with my mates.
oh christ what a disaster!! i just couldnt hit a thing,i didnt score after hitting a 7,7,7 in my first 3 holes, i maybe hit about a dozen decent shots in the whole round and whats more my driving collapsed aswell.on the positive side it was as windy as hell and my mates played crap aswell.
so its like starting from sqaure one.
to be honest when i did connect properly i was impressed.the only thing is i think ill have to postpone putting my 3 cards in for a while till i get used to my new clubs.

I've said it on other posts recently where forummers have been putting cards in and struggled, its about expectation. You had shiny new bats and probably tried way too hard with them to try and pose to your mates and justify them to yourself and forgot about the basics which had you playing much steadier.

If they were C/F's then it might be worth getting the set up double checked but otherwise relax with them and enjoy them.

Wimp ;)

Get those cards in now, and wait for those cheery chants of bandit when you win your first medal in 4 months time when the weather is better and you're used to your shiny new bats.

Congrats on joining a good club. Don't rush to master it too quickly, hopefully you'll be a member for many years to come.

:)

New sticks are a bit like a new woman. They look so sexy yet never give you everything they have. You need to take your time and show them some luvvin. Get to the range and just find the tempo your new sticks reqire. I agree that in a few weeks they will put out for ya.

Cumbrianhacker.

Well done for finally taking the bull by the horns and joining a club. I did a similar thing 12 months ago after playing golf occasionally on dozens and dozens of courses for 30 years, and I can safely say it was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

I didn't know any one at the club I joined but generally they are a friendly bunch and they have made me very welcome. Renewed my membership yesterday for the next 12 months and are looking forward to meeting and playing with a lot more of the members.

I would reconmend that once you get your handicap that you try and play in as many comps as possible as its an excellent way of meeting the other members. I found that if you treat them with respect and ask them for help on any rulings that you are not sure about they will give you all the advice/help that you might need.
I even got asked to represent the club in an Mixed match when they were left one short when one of the guys pulled out. I have now played four matches for the mixed team with a 100% record, (wins that is) so get in there and enjoy yourself.

Good luck.

I may be a bit cynical but I cannot see whether the OP's shiny new weapons were custom fitted is going to make much of a difference.

Until relatively recently, almost everyone played with off the shelf irons and got by fine.

I wouldn't worry about a bad round. God knows, we've all had plenty!

My advice would be:

Forget about it.
Get down the driving range and hit a big bucket of balls before your next round.
Relax and enjoy your next round.

i got my new bats from golf direct and you have an option as to whether you want them custom fitted or not and yes i took up this option.you get a questionaire which you fill in.which was quite extensive.with your height, swing speed, distance you hit certain clubs.wrist height.etc.
dont get me wrong,i know that its gonna take time and patience.in fact im relishing the challenge.
and if the crap weather forecast proves to be right, im off to driving range this week.like my golfing buddie says "if we were all brilliant at golf it would be bloody boring".
