Do these soften water too? We have a Samsung FF with a water dispenser. Samsung filters are fairly expensive, and so the previous houseowner had been using a generic filter. We have been using the same for a while. One of the things i notice is that it is not effective against hard water. The simple test is when you find white particles at the bottom of your drink after the ice has melted. So i took a lot of ice and dumped into a tall glass. When it had melted, you can see all the white bits at the bottom. It may have been because the filter was past its date. So have put a new filter in and will try the experiment it again in a few weeks.

So back to the question, is it normal to see hard water particles in fridge filtered water? Is it is a problem with generic filters and should one stick to the branded ones?

Fridge water filters should be replaced every 6 months. They do not soften water, just filter it. The obvious sign of a healthy water filter is the ice created is a lot clearer. If you don’t use your ice that often, then throw it away and refresh the ice contents as ice will absorb odours and will gradually shrink as well.
The generic water filters are no different to the ones with your brand name printed on them.
