While in my last job I used and sold AVG (got to gold reseller status), they do a free edition and is perfect for home users. I never had any bother with hundreds of machines running it.

Ooh...free VIRUS software sounds bad..... :D

If you want an anti-virus software for free just go for AVG.

AVG free 8.5 - I currently run it on 3 computers and have no complaints as yet.

There have been a few "issues" with people running AVG with the latest edition of Firefox. Don't know if it has been sorted now???
I personally use AVIRA. Available as a free download.
So good, I upgraded to the paid up version.

Yes Smiffy, I'm sure there was a thread about that a while back. I've used AVG for years now and on various operating systems........no trouble. :)

I was one of them.
AVG worked fine with ie and the earlier versions of Firefox but not so well with later versions.
Just who moved away from who I have no idea.
Kept Firefox, ditched AVG for Comido and the pc runs much better.

AVG is fine, I use it myself
But you also need something specifically for Spyware

go to www.malwarebytes.org and download the free version

update it and scan, It is a totally manual program, it does not protect your PC like an anti virus program, but it is the best "Cleaner upperer" there is.

Use Both, you know it makes sense

I've switched away from AVG as have a few of my friends.
It's started to lag a little in virus definitions, and I found that Avast virus seemed to have a better detection rate.

Anti Virus software will do nothing to speen up or smooth out the running of your pc or lappie.

Download Window Washer and run it. That'll delete a lot of temp internet releated cache files and the like.

Also defrag your HD and upgrade your RAM if you can afford.
