(*u wont know who i mean but was retired pro who was teaching me to do it perfectly & i mean dead straight no tiny twists , now selling mars bars in the big pro shop in the sky)
 
I can see it being useful if you were experimenting with different layers of tape so could switch a grip a number of times without wrecking it.

Otherwise whats the point I could remove a worn grip just as quick with a knife.

Yes, Granted. But it saves the mess and use of solvant putting it back on. ANd If a grip goes on wonky, it'll be easy to fix.

And you wouldn't have to leave it to dry out over night
 
Great post - I was going to try a few different layers of tape to see what is the best. However, I was somewhat put off by the hassle of trying to put it on and off too many times.
