My son turned six a few weeks ago and despite never showing an interest previously loved the recent World Cup and watched as many matches as he could and now constantly plays football at home.

I took him to his first game last night and he loved it, despite his team losing to an 89th minute penalty. My personal favorite was his disgust at the ref for not booking an away player for kicking the ball away. The bloke next to me couldn't believe it was his first game. It's not something I knowingly told him.

I'm not much of a football fan myself and had forgotten how uncomfortable the damn seats were, the game was pretty boring too and I spent most of the first half watching the sun set over the stand wishing I had my camera!

I was worried six was too young for his first game, but he sat for the whole time and concentrated on the game and was awestruk with the fans, even though it was less than half full.

What are your memories of your/your kids first matches?

Great topic.

Mine was Boxing Day...erm....1995/1996 Season.

My sister's dad (different to my dad) lives in Nottingham right across the River Trent from the City Ground. He's a lifelong Forest fan and I had become a Forest fan. He bought me a Brian Roy #22 Home Shirt for Christmas and also had a ticket for me to go and watch Forest vs. Sheffield Wednesday (I think) in the Main Stand on Boxing Day that year. They won 1-0 (though I had to look that up to remember the score). But what I remember vividly was the eruption of the crowd when they scored and how flipping cold it was!

Excellent day. Wish I still had my old Forest shirts :(

Spurs fan then? :D
My first match was Northern Ireland vs albania in the late 80s, we won 1-0, had a bag of clove rock with me and will never forget it either as it was another first!

Berwick Rangers v Falkirk when I was 3 and a half....needed a piss at half time and wouldn't go to the big boys bogs so my Pa took me the 300 yards home for a lag before heading back to see the Dream Team win 3-1!

My first game was in about 1964 I went to a 3rd round FA Cup tie Crystal Palace (3rd division) v Leeds Utd (1st Division I think) we got stuffed but it was the start of 45 years of being a Palace fan.

I took my son to see us play Norwich City when he was 5 and he's a fan too now aged 27

Motherwell v Morton in 1978. I remember a young sub called John Gaghan wearing orange soled boots and wishing I could get a pair. I was a season ticket holder for 15 years until Ged Brannan chose to play for The Cayman Isands in 2000 and abandon Motherwell at a crucial part of the season. I realised then that I didnt fancy funding such gob 5h1te5

My first live game was at Crystal Palace vs West Ham

Clyde Best was playing, and West ham won 3-0 or 3-1. It meant nothing.

Then I got taken to Highbury to see Arsenal vs West Ham.

It was 0-0. Nothing happened.

I was hooked.

I was born to be an Arsenal fan.

Sad but true

:p

Milk Cup 3rd round 1982. Liverpool v Ipswich. I was 8 years old don't remember a great deal about the game just that I was awestruck by the atmosphere.

Can't recall the first game but it was Brighton & Hove Albion in 1973, maybe vs Aston Villa in the old division 2.

Best game I've been at was the first Merseyside final in 1986 which Liverpool won 3-1.

Makes a massive difference, certainly for a kid.

There was 16K at Elland Road on Tuesday and my lad spent loads of time watching the Leicester fans in the South stand and the Leeds fans in the Kop.

The following day I asked him what his favorite bit was and he said cheering the Leeds goal. Not the goal it's self but the fans reaction - that was the only time the people around us in the East stand sang during the game.

As for me, i've been having a think, the first game dad took me to was, I think, 1987. It was Leeds 4-2 Swindon.

Remember going to the League Cup game v Liverpool at Anfield where we got done 9-0. Think it was one of Fowlers fist games and he got 4 if I remember rightly. Wasn't fussed about the game after about 4-0 but loved ti occasion and the atmosphere. The Liverpool fans were great that night and the Fulham fans were better and were singing their hearts out - saying we'd do them 10-0 at home.

Cowdenbeath v Aberdeen in a cup tie. Joe Harper scored a hatrick and again in the return leg, think it was mid 70's. Thats the only early game I recall but it could have been Everton v Coventry with Tommy Hutchison playing for Coventry on the wing when I was at my Aunties. Too long ago but support The Pars and was probably there before I was 8 but memory loss :D

Aged 9, my Dad took me to see the 'mighty' Gillingham against Doncaster Rovers at Priestfield in 1973 - won 5-1, and was smitten, for my sins, with the Gills from that point on

1982, Aberdeen v Airdrieonians, league match won 2-0 by Aberdeen. Think Wee Chesney scored, can't remember the other scorer. They were a decent side around then under Fergie.

1972 - Leatherhead beating Walton and Hersham. Dave Beasant playing for the Red Scum. The mighty Tanners had the likes of Chris "Budgie" Kelly and John Swannell in goal. The start of a long association with Leatherhead in non-league football.
