Football players why oh why

I have a horrible feeling that Celtic and Rangers will come out of the hat together in tomorrow's draw. Don't know why, just a feeling...
 
The real scary thing is that a good number of footballers also play golf!

I'm supposed to believe that on a Saturday a guy will lie & cheat is way through 90 mins but on Sunday the same guy will follow all the rules and actively call penalties on himself :confused:

If cheating is in your 'DNA' then you will cheat at any sport including golf

That is absolutely, so not true!

I played football, many of the guys at my club are the ones that I played football with and against in my footballing days. I haven't ever seen any one of them cheat - EVER!


In football there is a referee who makes ALL of the decisions, it doesn't matter who claims the throw in or penalty! Most players don't dive and do not cheat. Fouling is just part of the game its not cheating. To suggest that footballers would automatically cheat at golf is grossly an unfair statement

Aw c'mon now I never said all footballers are cheats or all cheats are footballers or all footballers at your golf club are cheats

Not sure what your point is but I agree fouling isn't cheating... but we know some footballers do cheat, we know many footballers play golf, some of these cheats will play golf.

Their integrity is already in doubt in my mind regardless of whether its for a game of golf, football or Monopoly with the kids... a cheat is a cheat!

Or are you saying that you've seen your golf partners cheat at football but not at golf?

My point is that football and golf are entirely different games with totally different rules/codes. People who play football do I in the customs and ways of the game - you would call that cheating! When they play golf they recognise that its a totally different code and they are more likely to be stringent about the rules than anyone - that's certainly my experience anyway. I just don't accept that footballers are any more or less likely to cheat at golf than a cricketer who won't walk when he snicks a catch, a snooker player who knows he brushed the ball with his arm etc etc
 
Football is not a sport which I want my kids to be involved in.

I wouldn't dare take a child to a football game. They would be asking what the swear words beginning with F, C, W etc. meant.

Normally I understand why people have to keep having a pop a t Man U but unfortunately on this occasion they are far from being the big spenders on external resources, especially when you look at their size, success rate and income they could spent a huge amount more but tend to reinvest a lot of it.... UTD have spent millions on their development and academy's. They are arguably one of the front runners in trying to develop home grown talent from within. Fergie for all his bad traits was a pioneer with this. I could name dozens of players that are not all playing for Utd now but came from one their academies originally. The same could be said of the likes of Arsenal, Southampton and a couple of others who are very good at the grass roots stuff. Even Swindon are bloody good at the kids stuff! Unfortunately Man City and Cheslki etc dont have the same ambitions with their cash and only seek to buy buy buy overseas players...... in order to win the big stuff. imo

Football has taken a back seat with me recently for all the reasons rightly mentioned here. My sons hopefully will take up a more noble and credible sport that isnt all about the £ sign

No I wouldn't call them cheats, that is the same as saying all footballers are cheats

The ones who are cheats are those acting dishonestly to gain an advantage, this only applies to a % of footballers (the minority)

I understand that the gamesmanship of the two sports are different as well as levels of acceptable behaviour and a number of other differences...what isn't different is a player in either sport acting dishonestly to gain an advantage and if a player can do it in one sport they can do it in any sport

And I'm just saying that I believe footballers are no more likely to do it than any other person who plays golf, in fact less likely as they are actually sports people and, whether you believe it or not, are bright enough to understand that cheating in golf is a no no

so we almost agree :)

Question is why would a football cheat consider it a no no to cheat at golf but also consider it far more tolerated/accepted to cheat at football, is it the penalty if caught cheating? or that cheating isn't a requirement in golf?

And as mentioned on earlier posts is it the punishment aspect that would need to be introduced into football in order to have an impact?

Most don't blatantly cheat at football because, if caught, they get sent off or booked and that will eventually cost a suspension. Those who bend the rules often do so because its entirely up to the officials to determine whether they've done something wrong and the penalty for doing so, if they get a way with it that's ok too. In golf the same player/person knows that he has to call it and invariably will do.
