There seems to a bit of talk about number of wedges and number of longer clubs at the other end of the bag. I know that lofts aren't the be all to how far each club goes, ie a hybrid and a long iron of the same loft. But what are your gaps like throughout the bag.?

Mizuno MP600 Driver 10.5
Ping G10 3 Wood 15.5
Mizuno CLK Rescue 20°
4 23
5  26°
6  29
7  33
8  37
9  41
PW  45
GW 52
SW  56
LW  60°

So as an example, if I was to drop to a 3 wedge set up, what would go in at the other end?

Just interested as to why folks need to drop a long club to have a four wedge set up.

Well, I carry
driver,
4 and 7 woods, or if it's playing long i.e. it's a bit wet and/or windy, 3 and 5 woods,
then 4-LW.

In summer there simply isn't a 3 iron shot on the course for me. In winter I swap the LW for a 3h as I'll use it on one of our par 3's and probably a couple of other holes that in summer are a 4 or 5 (or even 6) iron.

Don't know if that makes sense but it works for me.

interesting to see the 4deg gap in between all of those irons.

Nowif i remember my o level maths, the cosine of the angle between 20degs and 45 degs isn't a linear relationship, so it seems odd that the gaps go in equal intervals.

Especially as the wedges just send the ball higher rather than longer

Driver - 10
3 wood - 17 (but may become a 15 soon!)
5 wood - 19
Hybrid - 23
5 iron - 27
6 iron - 31
7 iron - 35
8 iron - 39
9 iron - 43
PW - 47
GW - 50
SW - 54
LW - 58

I guess you would put in something between your 3w and your hybrid but it depends on gaps.
I've got a 17 degree 3 wood and a 19 degree 5 wood at the moment - not enough of a gap so probably going to get a 15 degree 3w to replace the 17.
Apart from that I have decent gaps all through.

I don't know my iron lofts, I just hit 'em! :)

Dropped my old P/W (47-48° maybe?) because my new 50° Ping Tour wedge goes just as far.

4h - 22*, 40.0"
5i - 25*, 38.25"
6i - 28*, 37.75"
7i - 31*, 37.25"
8i - 35*, 36.75"
9i - 39*, 36.25
10i - 43*, 36.0"
AW - 49*, 35.75"
SW - 55*, 35.5"

Job jobbed.

Tut tut!

I'm quite happy with my current set up. But I was interested as to where the compromise from long to short clubs existed and the effect of a two, three or four wedge bag has on the other end of the bag.

TBH, what I have works reasonably well for me. But I guess it depends on your ability to hit a GIR from, say, 180 yards plus as to whether you need the options at the long end of the bag or the options at the shorter end of the bag.

So in essence the better player could theoretically carry less wedges than a higher handicapper. The opposite of the current thought of better player equals more wedges. Or is it that the better player can control their length better with any club, and therefore has space for more wedges. Or perhaps, just needs less??!!

As an effect on my game, I couldn't give a toot. I'm happy (ish) with my set up. Though I do wonder what others thoughts are.

Maybe you're right Brendy!

Nah. It's just a discussion!!

Just a thought!

Im probably gonna get pulverised for this now but why on earth do club golfers with average handicaps feel the need to play 60 deg wedges....Even Seve didnt use one... :D

These are mine
Driver 10.5
3 wood 15
5 wood 18
4 hybrid
4 Iron 22 deg
5 Iron 25 deg
6 iron 28 deg
7 Iron 31 deg
8 Iron 35 deg
9 Iron 39 deg
PW 43 deg
GW 49 deg
SW 56 deg

I wouldn't dream of it Kid2! :)

The only reason I've got one is because my mates Son was getting rid of 2 old Titleist Vokeys that happened to be 56 and 60. Believe me, I need all the help I can get to oink it up over a bunker with not much green to work with :( :D
Works sometimes.

Golfmmad.

Used at the right time and in the right place a 60 degree lobber is a wonderful tool. It's known as a blob wedge because it gets used too much in places you shouldn't use it.
That's why I like to have 4 wedges. It gives me a club for any situation do I don't have to reach for the lobber all the time.

Growing in confidence using my 3 iron and glad I persevered with it Driver still on the wish list but lob wedge definitely off it. In the future I'd consider a different wedge set up but at the moment I'm happy.

3 wood 15
2 hybrid 17
3 iron 20 deg
4 Iron 23 deg
5 Iron 26 deg
6 iron 29 deg
7 Iron 33 deg
8 Iron 37 deg
9 Iron 41 deg
PW 45 deg
GW 52 deg
SW 56 deg

But if most use a 56 deg wedge for the bunkers and open this up in bunker shots then why dont the same individuals use a SW in the LW situation and just open the face.....Same outcome :D

Depends on the lie and the bounce of the club and also the situation. SW's normally have a fair bit of bounce to prevent digging into the sand. Open that up on a tightish lie and you'll have fun.......

But honestly Murg....Would you use a 60 deg LW off a tight lie?
You've got Big Cahona's pal ....sorry for the spelling :p
You wouldnt find me near one off a bare lie ;)

No - I'd use my CG15 58 degree instead. Dual sole grind so its easier to get under the ball. Real bounce of about 6-8 degrees. Much easier. Haven't had a 60 in the bag for 5 years or more.

Sorry my mistake...I thought it was a 60deg LW......
Still good confidence to be able to hit that off a tight lie....I tip my hat to you sir ;) ;)

I'm in a real pickle at the moment, my 60* has a 4 or 6 bounce angle and out of bunkers it's awesome, and maybe once every other round I pull off a great shot not in bunkers but I'm dropping shots frequently by miss judging when is the correct time to us it, my other wedge is a 52 and this is great but when your up close to pond/bunkers/greenside mounds it's not enough.

Now her in doors is gonna get me a new vokey for Christmas to replace the 60, but I'm not sure whether to go 56 or 58.

So the question is which would be best to replace that 60*
