flop shoot anyone do it

I will play them everyone I have a fluffy lie, so then when the situation is needed I'm set for it, It's also a safety net around the greens knowing that I tend to hit it one way and to cover a certain distance so I can determine where my out will be, my chipping is a bit suspect but I've nailed the glob courtesy of having a green outside my fro t window. Perfect practice range.

A flop out of foot deep Heather - that would have been special!
No - trying to beat the damn thing out of the Heather...!!
Caught it as clean as a clean thing in Cleansville, Arizona.....
I was aiming for the bunker!

That is how you play out of heather when you are short sided. Cross between a flop shot and a bunker shot. Just don't get the ball clean when the Clubhouse is behind the green.

Not that I ever get into the heather when I play.

any of you guys do the flop shoot? if so whats was the out come good or bad?

YES, but only when i have a very good lie for it, because if i have the lie for it I'm very very good at them.
If i dont have the right lie for it then, ill only consider it only if its only option.

I have practiced the flop shot very very much just for the off chance i need it, and well it does come in handy

My last 2 typify my results.

1. Near perfect execution from medium rough over bunker to tight pin. Failed to fall in for Eagle, but 'blow-in' Birdie.
2. Having to get up and down to halve, boned from downhill lie in medium rough to end up further from the pin than I started!

The last 3 times I have used it I have put it close on the course, thats 3 times in about 10 rounds though. All have been with my 14* bounce 56* wedge.

I practice it a little, and only use it on the course off a perfect lie. Anything less than perfect and I take out my 52* and just aim to get it safe and on the low side of the hole.

This days it is my regular greenside shot. Never played it last year, but now I can pull it off 8 times out of 10. key & lie s commitment and use of either my 56SW or 60LB.

On another note.. most of the rest of my shots are just flops..

I love it, but I need the right lie to do it, sat up nicely so I can get the club right under the ball. Anything else then it becomes a long drive competition!

Interesting you say that, i would always prefer a nice tight lie for a flop shop, very much the same as i would in a bunker. A lot less variants that way!

each to their own though :)

One of my favourite shots, but only when required for a quick up and down, plus entirely dependant on the lie. Played a pairs match last week and nailed one - could see it was right on the pin and then a huge splash as it landed in the water-filled hole :-)

Ball has to be sitting up on nice fluffy grass though. Any doubt and I'll accept less height and more run on the ball.

I know how to do it but would only do it if it was the only option. Prefer a lower risk shot if possible

Same here.

I've only ever found it neccecery to do it once in a competition as, as HJS says, it was the only option.

I managed to pull off the shot, but wouldn't do it day in, day out if other, less risky options were available.

used to do it a lot when all I had was a standard pitching wedge. Now I have a 56deg wedge I have much less need to do so. However I still enjoy 'cutting one up' from time to time.

As a matter of interest, for all those that do play this shot, how often do you get up and down when you try it?

I'm guessing not all that often. So maybe it would be better to just play to the safe side of the green and 2 putt anyway, that takes the risk out of it?

I use it occasionally in match play if there is no other option or the state of play on the hole demands a glory shot.

Almost never with a card in my hand, accepting a bogey is no bad thing when the consequences of a full out could be disastrous.

when you say flop shot. ill quite often use my 60 to go over things or just to throw it up a bit and land it by the pin. say, a few times a round.

balls out full pelt lobs are a different kettle of fish. not really necessary.

Bit of an assumtion there mate. I practice this shot a lot (as I think it's just a fun shot to play) and will take it on regardless of lie where there is a need to do it and I will more often than not get up and down from it.
I actually feel more confident in my flop shot than I do with a bump and run with, say a 7 or 8 iron, due to not knowing how the bump and run will react.

No it's not. We are all handicap golfers and NONE of us get up and down everytime we miss a green. If we did we'd probably all be off scratch. The sensible thing at our level is to play the percentage shot and accept a 2 putt.

But not everyone's handicap is related to around the green play. If I could drive and hit long irons like I can play around the green then I would be lower than I am (thats the opinion of a Pro anyway). So to assume that every handicapper struggles around the green IS an assumption.
