Due to play in our 4 ball better ball competition with Hywel (HTL) this morning. Absolutely chucked it down but fortunately we were not due to go out until 9.50. Was in the clubhouse having a coffee and the 18th was already flooding. The assistant greenkeeper came in about 9.30 grabbed the klaxon used for lightning and pulled the event. I think the 8.00 had only got to the 8th and by all account the course shouldn't have been open. There was a sharp frost about 4.00am but someone (I presume greenstaff) saw the greens were clear (rained the frost off) and put the flags out.

Apparently they were still rock soilid underneath and of course the rain had nowhere to soak into hence every green was flooding. It was the right choice of course and the captain was apologetic to those who had gone out and got soaked but I bet there will be some questions asked behind the scenes.

At least my kit stayed dry and I was warm indoors with a coffee and the sunday papers to read. To be honest looking at the forecast and how wet the course is I doubt it'll open this week and that the rescheduled event next Sunday will be touch and go. Is anyone else struggling weatherwise, especially with flooding?

It was fine down here this morning. tee off time was 8.05 and i made it around all 18 before it started. The course was a bit wet in places but it normally drains quite well anyway so i wasn't to worried.

You were unlucky not to get out having made the effort to go along but i guess these things happen.

I like your 'glass is half full' way of looking at it :o

Golf in Great Britain - no-one said it was going to be easy! :D

I played yesterday afternoon and in places the course was almost unplayable. Very sticky and squidgy. Forecast says lots of rain this week - we'll probably be open next friday but it won't be pretty.

It was amusing watching the gaggle of umbrellas disappearing into the 2nd as the earlier tee times went out and I did have a chuckle as I watched these bedraggled masses come down 18 towards sanctuary once the klaxon went

I heard the course on Medeira wont be open for a while.
The 2 at the top of the mountain might be but the lower one might have washed itself into the adjoining prison. I played there about 12 years ago and remember the course next to the prison. They had music playing over the loud speekers and i kid you not one of the songs was Queen 'I want to break free!' sadistic b4st3rds!! I was laughing so much i missed a tiddler :D ;)

Played at Bearwood Lakes today, (not far from your Ascot course) whilst is was a bit naff in places it was certainly playable - it was raining up until an hour before we tee'd off. Having all the flags at the front made it impossibly hard... but we all coped :D

We have a few areas that are quite badly 'mashed'. But the course hardly ever closes and no temp greens. Though the new course is due to open in April. So I guess it's about keeping playing and the interest in the new course up, to attract new members.

You certainly don't want to end up just short of the green on some holes though. A JCB would have trouble getting the ball out!

We were allowed to play on the Kent & Surrey yesterday although it was very very wet. It was bitterly cold with the ground frozen when we started and pouring with rain.
Several guys walked in after a few holes because it was so bad.

Not sure how much damage is being done to the course, but one of the locals (I have only been there a year) said that they rarely called it off there.

Am left wondering when the so called water table gets so high that actually land becomes sea. Amphibious golf anyone?

I think there is a reason why we have seagulls on our course at the moment, they are just waiting for the fish to come along.

Some pictures of the course, taken today, have been posted on our clubs website. We have had continual rain down here, all day yesterday, really heavy overnight and it was of biblical proportions until about 2.00 this afternoon.
It's still raining but nowhere near as heavily as it was first thing.
The pictures make for very sad viewing.
The head greenkeeper comments that he has NEVER seen the course so wet, and it looks like a bombsite to be honest.
Sad days

I went to Rome 10 days ago and when we landed there was snow on the ground. Couldn't believe it as i was looking forward to some decent weather.

Played a course to the North West of the city the next day and it really should have been closed as the fairways were soaking. Lost 2 balls through plugging in the fairway and another drive got 2 feet of backspin, with a driver!

The rugby the next day wasn't up to much either but at least we won.
