Due to play in our 4 ball better ball competition with Hywel (HTL) this morning. Absolutely chucked it down but fortunately we were not due to go out until 9.50. Was in the clubhouse having a coffee and the 18th was already flooding. The assistant greenkeeper came in about 9.30 grabbed the klaxon used for lightning and pulled the event. I think the 8.00 had only got to the 8th and by all account the course shouldn't have been open. There was a sharp frost about 4.00am but someone (I presume greenstaff) saw the greens were clear (rained the frost off) and put the flags out.
Apparently they were still rock soilid underneath and of course the rain had nowhere to soak into hence every green was flooding. It was the right choice of course and the captain was apologetic to those who had gone out and got soaked but I bet there will be some questions asked behind the scenes.
At least my kit stayed dry and I was warm indoors with a coffee and the sunday papers to read. To be honest looking at the forecast and how wet the course is I doubt it'll open this week and that the rescheduled event next Sunday will be touch and go. Is anyone else struggling weatherwise, especially with flooding?
