I used to think this was a bit of a myth when the TV commentator said the player had airmailed the green because of a flier from the rough. However, after suffering from a couple myself in the last two rounds I now know what they mean. From experience it only seems to happen when you flush the shot from the middle of the club. I had an 8 iron carry about 160 against the wind from the rough last week. Usually it will only go about 150 with no wind and perfect conditions.

Yup had one yesterday with my 8i which went over the back looked a bit like a flier lie but. I daren't club down as I was playing over water.

Fragged will claim a flier for the 200 yard I iron he hit yesterday
The fact that is was downhill, down a hefty breeze and the ground was rock hard with nothing to stop the ball will have nothing to do with it... ;)

I can never make up mind if I am going to get a flyer or a poor strike because of the grass so will always use the same club.
Mind you my days of putting a lot of spin on the ball are a distant memory.

I am very poor on judging the lies and often think "I'll be ok" and then hitting it further than I should. Managed that twice at 18 this weekend. I am sure there was a good youtube video somewhere that explained different lies in the rough and an expected outcome but can't find it

Clean grooves help to reduce it as they wick away the moisture from the grass that causes the ball to come out hot. It's similar the the effect of car tyre treads in the wet verses slick tyres
