I'm playing in my first ever club competition tomorrow morning, and would appreciate a little help with the mechanics of scorecard completion. The golfing bit doesn't worry me..!

It's a Stableford and I'll be playing with two other members, so a three-ball.

My understanding is that:

1. I will need to keep a scorecard for one of the other two players, writing their gross scores against each hole as we go, in column A.

2. I can write my own scores on this card too (in the "Markers score" column) but only for my own interest.

3. At the end of the round I'll need to add up the scores of the player I'm marking and ask him to sign alongside my own signature.

Is this correct? What have I missed / misunderstood?

A couple of further questions if I may:

a. Who completes the card details (players name, date, H'cap etc)?
b. When we're back in the clubhouse, I understand that the hole-by-hole details need to be entered into the computer scoring system. Will I be entering my own scores here, or those of the player I've marked?

I'm sure the guys I'm playing with will help me out with all of this, but your assistance would be most appreciated! Thank you in advance.

Good advice there, some bits might be filled in for you.

I also recommend putting a clear 0 in or a / instead of scrubbing out a blobbed hole.

I alway circle the SI of the the holes where the person I am marking gets a shot, doesn't get a shot or gets two shots, whichever is less.

At the end of the round you will get your card back, it's your responsibility to enter the score and return the card into the scorecard box. No one else is responsible for this other than you!

I found I spent a lot of time and effort marking a card, to the detriment of my golf, in my first comp round.

Sad to admit it but I practiced marking a card and went on to win my next two comps.

Grab some spare cards and practice marking cards in practice rounds, just to get the skill up.

Lastly it's good practice (not required) to initial any changes, just in case of a query later.

all that is required is the gross score on each hole, the computer will do the calculations.

and don't forget after checking the scores are correct ensure there are two signatures on the scorecard

also.... Always good to know who is doing what throughout the round by marking yours and others scores but for the sake of clarity cross out/put a line through all other scores other than the one you are marking at the end so there is no confusion.

Good luck and have fun!

I would never think of doing this. Not interested in what anyone else is doing.

My first comp was a stablefor (recently) and I read up on how the scoring works a few days beforehand. Seemed quite straightforward, but given the first comp nerves, All I could manage was marking my opponents gross, whilst he and the other PP rattled off 4 for 1, 2 for 2 and so on.
Just make sure that you get the minimum that is needed (name, HC, etc and the gross score per hole).
At the end, I sat down with my PP and helped me work through the stableford scoring.
Have played another comp after that, but the whole recording gross, figuring out how many shots my PP is to be awarded and then coming up with the stableford score still didn't come naturally to me. I'd much rather think about my game and not get all stressed / confused with getting the final score per hole whilst out on the course.
Chances are, you PP will know themselves how they are doing points-wise.

I'm sure that with a few more comps under my belt, it will all become much more natural.

1. I will need to keep a scorecard for one of the other two players, writing their gross scores against each hole as we go, in column A.

- Yes

- Yes

3. At the end of the round I'll need to add up the scores of the player I'm marking

- Although this is common practice it isn't mandatory, player just needs his correct gross scores logged for each hole, not added up

3 (continued)... and ask him to sign alongside my own signature.

- Yes

a. Who completes the card details (players name, date, H'cap etc)?

- Player

b. When we're back in the clubhouse, I understand that the hole-by-hole details need to be entered into the computer scoring system

- Yes, usually though not required at all clubs

Will I be entering my own scores here, or those of the player I've marked?

- Your own

I'm sure the guys I'm playing with will help me out with all of this, but your assistance would be most appreciated! Thank you in advance.

The most important thing is to try and enjoy the experience.
My first attempt resulted in a measly 15pts and only avoided last place through a N/R.
Did that spoil my enjoyment? Absolutely not!
I know what my playing level is and feel somewhat hard done by having a HC of 22 (IMHO should be higher).
Where I am at, I just enjoy playing and since starting playing in comps, meeting other members who I would not normally play with...and that is coming from somebody who suffers social anxiety!

Just play your normal game (or if possible, raise it a little),
At the end of the day, it's a round of golf and you don't make your living from it.
ENJOY and make sure to update the thread with how you get on (good or bad)...I admitted in a previous reply that I only scored 15 on the first time out - YOU WILL BEAT THAT SCORE!

That's not only for your own interest, it's so that you can check and confirm your score with the person who has marked your card. It takes very little time to cross check the gross scores - the only ones that matter.

Thank you all. Everything worked just fine, and I thoroughly enjoyed my first competition. The help I received here was extremely helpful.

Sadly I don't think that my 22 points will put me in contention. I did ok-ish on the way out (14pts) but could neither drive nor hole a putt on the back nine. Next time I'll do better for sure...
