Feedback On My Swing

Hello,

I would suggest working on maintaining the bend in your right knee on the backswing. If you look at the video you straighten it a little, probably causing you to load into your left side (no front on video to check).
Secondly, you have a nice squat at transition but don't seem to rotate your lower body and core. If you look at your downswing your shoulders stall (slow rate of rotation) halfway down so I presume your sliding into the ball rather than turning. Again could do with a FO video. I shared the same faults earlier in the year so gimme a pm if you like. http://www.youtube.com/user/85milesb/videos

As a comparison look at Gary's lower half. He keeps his hips level on the backswing by avoiding straightening the right knee too much (other things going on also), then at transition he squats like you but rotates hard with his lower body and spine. His upper body slightly resists this rotation at the beginning but then get's pulled along by his rotating core. This differs to you because you fire everything from the top of your swing thus your shoulders need to slow to avoid hitting a slice, because they have overtaken the body. Below is a suitable drill for improving the core rotation and how it should feel.

So, Ben Hogan (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QL_6M_xZvq0) and Sam Snead (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n48qybm_0Jo) must be doing something wrong then <WINK>

As I understand it, allowing the right leg to straighten on the back swing allows for a better hip turn?
Yes Sammy and Hogan did straighten their right legs, however they managed to do so whilst turning into their right sides. Then they both executed perfect downswings.

This isn't easy to do, when most amateurs straighten their right legs you get the position below. (Like I said earlier, need to see a front on image to check)

While I see you're point. If you maintain the flex in your right leg, this will restrict your hip turn and possibly inhibit your shoulder turn also. This, in turn could cause you to start lifting and bending your arms. I'll use Robert Rock as an example (Of allowing the right leg to change flex)

When I say straighten your Right leg, I don't mean lock it out straight, I mean allow it to change the flex (Straighten) to promote a better hip turn.

Phil Mickleson does something similar

If the ball is going the direction and distance you want it to then your swing looks perfect! :-) hehe

Right hand grip looks a bit strong (too far round to the right of the club's grip).

Bob's Headcover Drill might well help.

Probably no problem avoiding the first one, but the second could go flying a bit at first. That should help the chicken-wing too - as should the 'weaker' right hand the JO mentions too.

Pretty damned good for only a couple of months though.

That's very good for how long you have been playing. Nice positions through the swing but I agree that you dont rotate your core (hips an girdle) enough through the downswing and impact. Dont try to overdo it though, you need to let your lower body just get out of the way so your arms and club can swing right through to a full finish.
