Favourite first hole in golf

1st Hole at Pitlochry. Picture from vicinity of 1st tee shows 1st climbing up Craigower (hill) with OoB on RHS

Love the place - love the 1st.

Can also think of some top courses that have pretty poor opening holes like Royal Cinque Ports and Rye.

I agree with you re. RCP, especially when you look at the quality of the other holes on the course, but it does ease you into your round.

Love the 1st @ the Vilamoura old course.

Seems a little that people favourite 1st holes are generally 'easier' openings though? I don't think they need to go hand in hand.

I also maintain that the 1st @ hindhead is probably the worst on the course and easily the worst on the front 9.

Agreed. Common theme with a lot of links courses I think. Royal St Georges 1st in the same bracket, fairly low key start before the course opens up in front of you.

I thought the 1st was a weak hole on a otherwise great course,

i would not say its a weak hole, just prob the easiest of them so a nice gentle start to get you going in prep for the 2nd;)

16 on the other hand is the weakest hole, ive yet to meet anyone who likes that

I thought the first was, as in terms of a purely golf hole without the fact it's R/D rather uninspiring, can't remember to much about 16/17/18 as the heavens opened, but if you think 16 is weak you've played it enough so you must be right:thup:

16 is up a slope with 1 fairway bunker right and slope of on the left down to the beach, big flat green with a grassy hillock on the left.

I'll also have to throw in the first St Andrews, even just for the aura and goosebumps experience. One of the highlights of St Andrews.

Thanks remember it now, wife and I had a walk along the beach the day before I played, got a good photo of someone 1/4 way down that slope looking for his ball ,bit puzzled why he was looking as it was quite steep.
