Let's see if we can come up with the forums favourite first hole. Has to be a hole you have played and not just seen on the tv. Reasons you like the hole so much would be good.

I will go for the first at St Andrews. I feel confident, well more than on most first holes, that I can hit the fairway. The feeling on the tee is like no other. A mixture of excitement, anticipation of the round to come, and sheer panic. Biggest relief for me could be getting the ball to stay on the tee, or managing to take the club away from the ball.

Not the easiest of second shots with the burn in front of the green, but still a good chance to start with a par. For me opening holes should ease you into the round, especially as it takes me so long to warm up.

Honourable mention to the first at St Georges Hill (The Blue nine) Love having a nice wide fairway all downhill. Just don't top one into the heather.

I think the 1st at the West Course Wentworth. Just simply because I'd seen it so often on TV and walked it watching the pro comps. I hit a good 3 wood off the tee but still walked off with a poor 7 on an otherwise decent showing round there

I have two joint favourites

The 1st at Centurion - wonderful downhil dog leg right to left - keep the drive straight and its a good chance for a good four. The second shot is a good 200 yard into a trick green with a tricky bunker on the right

The 1st on the Duchess - very tight drive to top of the rise - then when you reach it you are faced with a nasty second shot downhill to a raised green. Nasty start but visually lovely

Also special mentions to the first at Burnham and Berrow and Littlestone

1st holes sometimes tend to be quite benign so your eased into the course, however, the 1st at The Centurion is anything but and is testing at any level whilst being visually stunning.

I quite like the first at Camberley...
Fairly gentle dog leg right, straightforward enough but still enough to bite you.
Still needs a decent 2nd shot

I'm with you on the 1st at St Georges hill. Another one is the first at Woking. Don't really know why, neither is the most spectacular holes on their respective courses. Could just be that they are my 2 favourite courses I've played.

West Hill, St George's Hill, Hankley and Hindhead all really good - the other one that pips the lot for me was Royal Porthcawl. And despite not a Wentworth fan, the 1st on the West is a great starter

Quite like Silloths. On the planner it doesn't look overly taxing however...

Off the tee the fairway appears a lot narrower than it actually is and you can clearly see the high potential for doom in the rough.

Second shot to a blind punchbowl that again, intimidating but actually ffairly generous, and gathers.

Hit two steady shots and you can start well, fall for it's wily defences and you can be in big trouble.

Fun, well designed, with teeth. Pretty much in keeping with the rest of the course.

I like the first at Blackmoor, simple looking but enough to catch you out. Others include the first at St Andrews as it has an atmosphere all of its own. Something unique about any opening hole though, where you've still got all those hopes of today being the day it all comes together.

I do like Hindheads 's first hole. Lovely wide fairway, and the heather down the right is usually GUR. Not so keen on Hankley's as i have never hit the fairway, and the heather is very thick.:(

Never fancy starting on a par 3, so not keen on Hayling, S & A and Liphook's first. All lovely holes, but they need to be further round the course.

Not a fan of North Hant's either then?

The first time I stood on that tee was probably the most nervous I've been on a golf course, it was an easy birdie though :D

Too many to choose from, and there are some that I cannot even remember. However, for me it would probably be Broadstone, short par five where you can reach in 2 with a good tee shot, but dead if you go right where you will find the Heather or water filled ditch.

No way there will be any consensus, for me the 1st at Mortonhall, an easy par 4 that you can take a poke at but rarely hit as its pretty narrow and a big risk off the 1st

Strathpeffer

Having driven up the hill to the course you then tee off massively downhill then out of bounds lurks behind the green. First time I played it , I was warmly welcomed by members so it always brings back good memories.

1st at Moray Old, danger if you spray it right and quite a few pot bunkers on the hole, it's a good risk hole when it's dry as you can get on the green if you get it down the middle.
always enjoy playing the moray open and trying not ruining your round on the opening hole.

Love the opening hole on both courses at Saunton - two brilliant par 4s.
