Gm handicaps (and commentary) as follows

Me 7 (will leave it to other GM staff to comment)

Neil Tappin 5 (should be scratch but has a frankly terrible short game and is mentally weak)

Jezz Ellwood 6 (awful swing but massive grinder who never ever gives up and has a very good short game)

Paul O'Hagan 6 (very solid all rounder low necky cut with driver never gets him to any bother, solid short game)

Alex Narey 18 (long driver, decent iron striker, recently had mental game lesson from our expert Gary Leboff which seems to have sorted his mind and putting out. Shot 78 the other week so needs to see handicap committee for a cut)

Tom Clarke 18 (fabulous eye for the ball but main game is cricket (good league standard) and has a swing to match)

Michael Weston (12, potential to go lower but needs to eradicate the toe shank and the one where he nearly hits it between his legs. Bit scared of the driver)

Fergus Bisset 1 (golf pervert plays more golf than many full time touring professionals)

Bill Elliott 15 (in very poor run of form but liable to do a sombrero and clean up now and then)

I like the character assasinasions. Very amuzing.

Perhaps the GM meet ups could include some 'observations' from playing partners on here. I'd be fascinated to see how someone would descibe my game. Apart from useless!! It would be quite refeshing. Or would this lead to a whole heap of acrimonious slanderous posts !?

I'd be up for it though.

Here's my run down of Mike's game:

Handicap 7 is largely down to a solid short game. Loves the flop shot and plays it in any given situation. Mike, however, is something of a Fred Funk figure. Incredibly short but straight!

Can be extremely slow. Uses a PowaKaddy.

Mike,

lol....excellent commentaries, especially Fergus the golf pervert!!

A lot of you are no sliouches on the course then!

I can see this thread getting some additonal comments from some of the GM boys very very soon :D

The only thing you missed out there Neil is "also uses a chipper" :D

Tappers is till cock-a-hoop with his round with Rory yesterday so is being nice to me. He is normally a lot more cutting.

I should add as an ammendment that when Tom Clarke joined us this year he tuned up with a ball retriever in his (very tatty) bag and 'black widow' sand wedge that boasted negative bounce and had marking on the face (pitted dots not grooves) that made it looked like some sort of medieval weapon/cooking spoon

Oh and granted as soon as Jezz makes it back from Gatwick he'll be on with some very incisive commentary

Couple of points for Alex Narey's BIO: He plays off 17. And is the only multiple Major winner on the GM OOM this season. Very gutsy; a fighter and all-weather player. Has a tendency to overplay the flop shot from the fringe, and has been known to crumble like mouldy stilton from 100 yards in.

BTW - Mike Weston is 17, and he will stay there until he learns how to hit a driver.

Just back from some time at Turnberry with the reigning Open champ and here is just a brief snippet from our conversation on the 10th tee:-

Padraig: What do you play off then?
Me: 5
Padraig: Yes, I thought as much

Anyway, very brief analysis of my colleagues below:-

Mike: Over-reliance on the Mickelson flop shot can cause problems. Good from the sand and on the green (and also from miles back on the fairway)

Neil: Long off the tee; short fuse; occasional chipping and Sherman issues

Paul: Has spent much time trying to persuade manufacturers to relocate driver sweetspots closer to the neck

Alex: At Kingswood OOM recently melted first driver 300 down the middle on a great flight; melted second drive at 45 degree angle resulting in multiple Woody Woodpecker action. Can be dangerous and consistency will come

Tom: Unknown quantity - never yet had the pleasure

Michael: Again much potential. Tendency to get a little down with results. Needs to understand golf takes a long, long time to never ever master

Fergus: My proud boast is that I am the sweet-swinging Aberdonian's nemesis yet he's still kind enough to occasionally put me up (or put up with me) when I venture up to his home patch

P.S. Just discovered I'm back down to 5 after gritting out a 75 in a 3-4 club wind last weekend. CSS up 3 to 73 so a full half-shot cut to 5.0 (lowest ever)

Jezz - good shooting last weekend well done. I guess as someone who has had the pleasure of your company I'd guess your description should read:

Dour and gritty competitior with a putter than can be molten. Very straight and combines length and accuracy. Been known to miss a few greens but has the ability to scramble. Very good man to have on your team!

MikeH
Like his leadership at GM - quiet and efficient he lacks length but has great accuracy especially with irons. A quality short game that has been honed over many years of links play (especially bunkers)

Jezza
think you must have missheard PH when transcribing your dictaphone tape from yesterday. Was very windy up there.

Sure it probably went like this

Padraig: What do you play off then?
Me: 5
Padraig: There must be some very easy courses near where you live.

Then it gets a bit crackly (probably Jezz unzipping his bag to reach in for another provisional) but PH can be heard saying to someone close by either Adrian his manager or John from Wilson

"I think this guy has had a bang on the head, he reckons he's off 5. Can soemone get the Turnberry doctor out to see him on the 11th tee. I've just watched him and he can't get his right sole off the ground at any point during his golf swing. I'd place him nearer 15 if I'm being honest.

Mike,

I might have thought that too, and that he was just being kind to me, had not our dear friend Monty said something vaguely similar to me a couple of years ago.

Personally I think Homer is perhaps the shrewder judge from his very kind comments!

P.S. I model myself on Kenny Perry - see recent issue of the mag for minimal weight transfer at precise point of impact
