Has anyone here received any 'social media' information from someone they know, passing on details of causes or cures for covid 19 ?
Did you believe them? What did you do about it?

A huge amount of guff gets posted on Facebook and a few relatives post stuff which is embarrassing. Some of it is clearly fake, scare mongering, borderline racist or just plain stupid. I largely ignore those posts but every so often I'll post something to correct the stupidity of what they have put, it is just a step to far. It is hard to do without pointing out their post is daft, or currently dangerous, but sometimes it is just a step too far.

In answer to the original question, if a friend or relative posted something clearly inaccurate about covid 19 then I would correct them. Ideally you would do a copy and paste job from a govt website so that you could show you are correcting them in a well meaning way, not looking for an argument. Keep it factual, not opinion, and hopefully it would help. Fake information at the moment is dangerous, don't feel bad about correcting someone

I'd do this ^^^
Had to the other day when a FB friend shared "Mosques should be closed like churches!!" etc. etc etc.
Of course.... false news.... mind you I did get a bit of a 'smart arse' reply for doing so. Noted!! ??

If someone could find (post) the part on the .GOV website where it says about picking up your kids if you are seperated from your partner, would be appreciated.
Not fake news (that I'm aware of) but can't find the facts as per the government (y)

Regularly.

Hate to say it, but the 55 year old plus age group seems to be the most gullible with their non-stop "sharing"...

Fake news, gossip, free Range Rovers, yeah right ?, some of them are non stop.

It gets embarrassing, don't really know what to do about it.

Do what I do & don't be on Twatter or Faceache.

I'm actually thinking of coming off the WhatsApp golf groups because of the amount of "funnies" I'm getting. They're funny the first time, but a couple of members who are on both or all of them turn into public service broadcasters every time they get one.

It's amazing the number of times the "winner" of whatever the prize is fails to contact them in time or isn't eligible for the prize so it has to be liked and shared again to find a new winner.

There was a lengthy piece on FB, supposed to have been written by an epidemiologist from John Hopkin Hospital. The language and detail was very good but it just looked a bit off in a couple of areas. It was almost there but not quite - maybe it was written by a first year med student. A couple of days later I saw exactly the same piece attributed to a Cardiologist from another hospital.

TBH, I rarely read anything like that, that comes through. If I want something accurate I'll go to a trusted source.

Yes, have told 2 people to stop sharing things that are clearly BS in long posts that also have the regular detergentsthat do work, I.e., wash your hands, social distancing etc, so it’s not being read properly. Apparently listerine and hot water can fight the virus off... ???
Makes me furious that people can a: read it and be so thick they can believe it, and/or b: being lazy and just share it without reading the full piece.

Part of the issue is that we have an older generation using social media for the first time to keep in contact with friends and family. They are not as atuned to the garbage on there as many are and so like and share things that we would simply ignore.

I'm 58, and I have had to teach my neighbors 20 year old son how to resolve his ping issues on his virgin superhub 3 in order to play without lag. (Switch it to modem mode, and buy a decent router, then port forward where needed).
I've also been online enough to have lived through the demise of lots of SM wannabee's such as my myspace, Google plus, Vine, friends reunited etc.
Some of us 'older guys' have been online for way longer than most and have seen some of this BS for the 3rd, 4th and 5th time round.

Please don't tar us all with the same brush.

Did not mean to. More that I taught my 72 year old mum etc. I am nearly 50 so no spring chicken either

On my part it's just observation.

There's several people who I've probably considered fairly sensible in real life, then you see the drivel they "share" and like and "♥" on FB, all in the same older age bracket.
Really! I've seen no ends of absolute BS that has the potential to frighten people with mental health issues and in almost every case its posted my millenials. It takes all sorts.
