Read a rather interesting piece in the Scotland on Sunday yesterday by John Huggan. Apart from the problems Monty will with his three wildcard, it also gave me a new word to add to my vocabulary, egregious.

egregious is a word used a lot in the US, usually in legal circles. It is one step below heinous.

yet at one time it meant eminent or distinguished

I think it also formed part of an academic title, as in Egregious Professor of Cruel and Unusual Geography . . . though whether this is solely an invention of Pratchett I'm not sure; it's often difficult to tell with him as something you're certain is pure invention has basis in reality.
