What a squeeze Danny's got coming all the way around from a wild shot to a drop zone next to the green but I can't believe the commentators are saying it's a poor lie, and then he goes and hits the flag and it stops dead for a birdie!

I think I just learnt another rule then also, did they say that as long as the ball bounced in the drop zone it could go forward by up to 2 club lengths forward, in other words nearer the hole? They did go on to say it's the only time a ball is allowed to go forward from a drop, not heard that before, I thought the ball had to stay in the zone?

Glad Rumford won it.
Not a huge fan of the mixed format and the "worst" outcome nearly happened.
Nothing against the guy who came 2nd, but he was 9 shots off the lead after 54 holes and was the last qualifier from the playoff
It's supremely unlikely that he'd have finished 2nd had there been another 18 holes of Strokeplay and winning would have been almost an impossibility.
Not against Matchplay, in fact I think there should be more Matchplay events. But mixing Strokeplay with Matchplay doesn't work for me.
Nobody would have caught Rumford in round 4, not the way he played all week.
And yet he, potentially, was 4 holes from losing...

Whilst I agree with all of that, a lot of sports have now been Americanised to have playoffs to keep people's attention.

How many times have the 3rd placed championship not got promoted?
I don't see it becoming mainstream on either tours, but a bit of a token idea to potentially get new poeple into the sport.

Well chuffed that Rumford won. A thoroughly decent chap I see regularly at Ascot in the summer who's very approachable. Deserved ti after winning the 54 hole stroke play and as others have said would have been "unjust" to have then lost out and not sure these mixed format competitions really work

Just learnt that rule as well Fish, was looking through the rules section and someone asks the question ' dropped ball allowed to run nearer the hole' it's to do with the reference point, rulie explains it well in his answer.

Bet we weren't the only ones not to know this rule:thup:
