Ethiopian girl band

Yes, the proper facts. The money went towards a program called Girl Effect, you can read what it does here http://www.girleffect.org/our-purpose/

The Girl Band were just one way in which the program used the money. The impact of the girl band can be found http://www.girleffect.org/media/3343/160609_marketingyegna_wave3factsheet_final_tag.pdf Of course it's up to interpretation if people think that is a good use of money and a good way to spread the message about what the programme is trying to do.

However the statement from the government actually said

"We have taken the decision to end our partnership with Girl Effect following a review of the programme. "Empowering women and girls around the world remains a priority, but we judge there are more effective ways to invest UK aid and to deliver even better results for the world's poorest and value for taxpayers' money."

which is fair enough, we need to ensure the foreign aid is going to those that need it most. As Old Skier says, it was a misrepresentation of the true story by the media just to get a great headline.

Yes, the proper facts.
they might well be proper facts Hacker, but the interpretation of what they are trying to achieve is well open to interpretation. Could that money be better spent? Deffo.
Well here is another fact, I went to see my dads brother today in a hospice in Oldham. He is terminal with cancer not helped by his leukaemia. It is run by donations. It is a charity. So after providing for his family throughout his life, inc six years as an enlisted signalman. He spends his final days in the hands of a charity.
Do I think that we should give to other countries, of course we should but it seems to me there are countries on that list that should be wiped off it. Who is accountable for where the money goes. The whole system needs revamping.

Well said .
i would just add the guy in charge of the foreign aid budjet has just been knighted .
its a crazy world politics.

American Charities spend a great deal of money on the ills of the world.

And so do British charities on top of meeting the 0.7% of GDP, which as stated earlier the US doesn't.

If a woman can lie on a hospital trolley in a corridor for 35 hours, and subsequently dying, and 20 other patients were on trolleys in that corridor there's something seriously wrong. And the Red Cross says the NHS is a humanitarian crisis. It's not that long ago it was rated as one of the worst health services in Europe.

As for the US being a poor country, scratch below the surface in every city in the U.K., and many towns, and you'll find food banks, soup kitchens, hostels, drop in centres...

Just a quick update, got a phone call from me mum about 8ish. Me uncle Wilf passed away suddenly at 6 pm this evening. Flippin good start to the year.

Condolences Tashy.

I have a funeral to attend on Friday. My favourite uncle, godfather and lovely man, well liked by so many people. There will be tears, and I'm not ashamed to admit by me too.

I dont disagree that British charities spend a lot on charities but the American public also do a great deal in raising money and supporting overseas charities. As you are probably aware churches in the USA are filled to bursting and they do a great deal of charitable work.

I also agree about it being wrong for people to be sat in Hospital corridors in trollies for 35 hours. I was sat in one for eight hours in a que of around twenty five myself not many months ago and it was a disgrace, people were being left unattended for hours and others being treated in the open in a most undignified manner. There were also some drunk young women making a nusense of themselves and an eastern European man who couldnt speak a word of English shouting and threatening nurses. It was a very bad experience. How come the UK has these problems and not other countries in Europe.

Sorry for your loss mate.

Cheers boys, gotta ring old man in five mins to see what's going off, ma and pa should of been off to canaries tomorrow and I was taking them to airport. But they have cancelled that. Uncle Wilf was cracking some right one liners on Saturday when talking to him. Me dad was on about when he/Wilf fractured his skull falling off a milk float when he was three. Wilf said " I never fell off you pulled me off", me dads face was a picture.
Me dad told us he went to Man Hester to sign up for the forces with two pals, they had a few beers in Piccadilly for Dutch courage and got bladdered. They said we cannot sign up like this. So went home. Me uncle Wilf who signed up when told the story said " well that's no suprise your dad having a drink".
Bless him.
