Recieved 5.2 million quid in overseas aid. 😠

Theres a a story in the BBC website saying they got 5.2 million. Which begs the question what the hell is going off.
nigh on £370 million to Pakistan, X million to India. Give me flippin strength. In a day and age when there are cutbacks in all services and folk are losing jobs.

I am asking myself, am I missing summat here.

its the law now that 0.7 of our GDP is for foreign aid so not only are we borrowing money and paying interest on it .
we now have a surplus that has been put into the world bank and we pay fees to have them mind it for us.
maybee that's why America has voted a buisness man into office .
as politicians can not be trusted with tax payers money it's a joke.
we should look after all those pensioners who paid in all their lives.
some aid is justified but not all.

And that is one of the 'donations' we know about. What about the hidden millions - total joke in this day and age.

I also see Scotland is considering giving everyone a minimum income - working or not !!

UK has a massive debt yet it seems there is there no limit to the financial stupidity and mismanagement ?

The first rule of first aid is make sure you and the area are safe you are no good to anyone if you also become a casualty, foreign aid should be the same.

Wise words, agree that we do need to help some countries, but not ones that have nuclear/ space capabilities.

This particular case sounds very much like a department that has a budget to spend, if they don't spend it, then the budget gets cut next year, so to avoid that they throw the cash away on anything .

Its just wrong

Yes, the proper facts. The money went towards a program called Girl Effect, you can read what it does here http://www.girleffect.org/our-purpose/

The Girl Band were just one way in which the program used the money. The impact of the girl band can be found http://www.girleffect.org/media/3343/160609_marketingyegna_wave3factsheet_final_tag.pdf Of course it's up to interpretation if people think that is a good use of money and a good way to spread the message about what the programme is trying to do.

However the statement from the government actually said

"We have taken the decision to end our partnership with Girl Effect following a review of the programme. "Empowering women and girls around the world remains a priority, but we judge there are more effective ways to invest UK aid and to deliver even better results for the world's poorest and value for taxpayers' money."

which is fair enough, we need to ensure the foreign aid is going to those that need it most. As Old Skier says, it was a misrepresentation of the true story by the media just to get a great headline.

Spending our money to help empower women in Muslim countries is just peeing it up against the wall, it just aint going to happen.

Isn't Ethiopia mainly a Christian Country ( Ethiopian Orthodox ) with Islam the second religion , as opposed to being a Muslim country ?

I have no objection to foreign aid where it is needed (empowering women and girls through music is NOT where it's needed, nor is contributing to counties ahead of us in space exploration or nuclear powers). However, I believe it is an absolute scandal that our foreign aid budget is enshrined in law and the percentage of GDP is set in stone and yet this is not the case for social care at home. Now the triple lock is under threat for those who have contributed for decades because we can't afford it.

I don't know, but if it is mainly Christian then you may as well invest the money in empowering women and girls in the UK

Which I'm sure there is lots of projects doing that

Foreign Aid is always a very emotive subject - lots of call to the "Aid begins at Home" etc

For me any Foriegn Aid should go to a country that is struggling financially and needs help- but don't think we should be sending Aid to countries that quite clearly can support themselves.

Maybe there are lots of projects doing that in the U.K. I wonder how many are publically funded though and none are set in stone and enshrined in law.
I agree with the rest of your post.
I think most would think of need as recovering from natural disaster, the aftermath of war, starvation, refugees and misplacement. It seems much of this budget is not going to worthy causes like these.

There are a lot of projects around the country going ahead with the aid of government or local council funding. Even some of them would be a waste to some

Looking at the money sent - a lot does seem to go to the war torn countries or countries with big issues - India though is the one country I expect a lot don't understand why we still give them money

The "enshrined in law" is a difficult circle to square when you consider only 5 countries meet the target(0.7% of GDP), one of which is the UK. One of the worst is the US at 0.01%, and Trump has just put a block on even more aid, saying we will not...

Some of the richest countries, with significant GDP's, give virtually nothing, e.g. the oil producers in the Middle East.

But if we don't, who will fill that gap? Its pretty clear it will be no one, and the world will be a poorer place because of it .

We do have a lot of problems at home, evidenced by the massive growth in food banks. There's some easy fixes but no one would dream of, a) closing the House of Lords, b) ending many of the grants to the obscure arts... and then there's the aid sent to the likes of.... fill in any country that satisfies your own opinion. Why we contribute to BRIC or Pakistan is beyond me, but wiser people have made that strategic decision.

The US is a very poor country though, if you look beyond the rich bits. They also could do with sorting their own house out before looking to help others. They just dont help themselves, or others.
