Not sure what the margins would be but the physical components mass produced would probably equate to something silly like £5 ... Factor in the advertising, logistics and sponsorship .. Maybe a little D and D and it might get up a little further but profit will be well in excess of 100% ... Your average Ford Fiesta is roughly 200% even with discounts.

I have never been one to buy new equipment anyway. I have always bought mine a season or two after.

I picked up my irons for a steal of £199 at DG and then they were put back up just under RRP a few weeks after the Christmas sale (£299-£399ish?) Same with all my other clubs really.

Most of the costs of clubs goes into marketing rather than the actual construction etc...

Still - I very much doubt i will be buying any new clubs any time soon.

I always tend to buy my clubs a year or two after release. They still work and are a fraction of the new price.

All equipment have a shelf life.

What are retailers supposed to to? Keep them on the shelf at full price while peddling the new stuff for not much more trying to get us to part with our hard earned?

Ive recently bought a set of Cleveland irons that, 18-24 months ago were selling at just shy of £700. I paid £179.99 new.

Stocks/lines eventually run their course. In this instance shops would rather sell at reduced margins to clear so they can get something current/desirable on the shelf to make a higher profit.

To get back to my original post, why are the latest golf clubs more expensive in the UK than in the US. My friend who regularly visits relations in the States says that you pay about the same in Dollars as you do in Pounds over here, but the Dollar is only about 2/3rd the value of the Pound. Rip-off Britain again?

I'm not sure there are the bargains in the US people think there are.

I friend of mine over there checked out the price of one of the Bushnell Tour X range finders and all were the same price as here.

It's just the way it is.

As per the point you were making, they are hardly the same price in dollars as they are in pounds.

There is bound to be a slight variance in price due to differing strength in currencies. Hardly the difference you were claiming!

I visited South Africa last year and most things were pretty cheap, apart from electronic goods, which seemed to cost even more than in the UK. I went gliding rather than playing golf, so I didn't look at golf equipment at all.
