Tonights team could be close to our starting lineup against France.
It looks fairly good on paper.
Still worried about Englands midfield.
Is Gerrard still the player we all know he can be.
Is Parker fully fit.
Nice to see Oxlade Chamberlin start,a ggod game could see him
get the nod over walcott.
As for Wellbeck,im sure its his llast chance for a starting place.

A typical Hodgson side, very defensive playing in a rigid 442 with not much attacking flair/quality.

Steven Gerrards best position is in behind the lone striker linking up play.

I don't think he's as influential playing in a 2 man centre mid.

He's still not 100% match fit but he had been out for over 12months so its took him a lot longer than thought.

Hopefully they'll be knocked out of the group stages and all our players come home injury free.

Very very boring football...no real attacking force...

As usual...we stand no chance. 2 1-0 wins and everyone will be singing "it's coming home" in a weeks time...the only thing coming home will be the team...early. It's very disheartening!

P.s. Gerard is past it!...he's actually that far past it, he's coming back up behind it!

Yes but Roy is a great manager........

Yep, very disappointing, only watched the 2nd half and as usual we gave the ball away too much. It's as though when an England player receives the ball, they say, oh, here you are I don't want it and give it to a team mate, get chased down by the opposition and quickly lose the ball.
When the ball's in the air and an Engand player heads it, it always goes to the opposing team, not so the other way round.

I didn't really agree with his appointment, but when Capello got the England job I thought things would really change and we would get some of the Italian mentality of not losing the ball, but history tells the same old story.

Trouble is, it's the only way England can play and from what I've seen from Hodgsons tactics nothing much is going to change.

I think it will take a "Visionary" type of Manager to change the English way, mind you, it's pretty simple isn't it, "Keep hold of that bloody ball". As the great Brian Clough used to say.

I watched today and the England problem is what it has been for many many years... movement off the ball.

when you see prem league stuff and man city/united/chelsk/Spuz etc, when they have the ball if you look in the background you see players, moving into space, with pace and giving the guy with the ball options. Its easy to look comfortable on the ball (barcelona) when you are pressed but have 2 or 3 team mates in space to use.

England, when on the ball, watch the other players , the jog around like they are warming up, no purpose, no trying to draw opposition out of postition to make space. Its really pathetic. I dont think its got anything to do with ability/skill, these guys are very comfortable and in control of the ball for their clubs, I just think england are lazy and just stand there with their hands in the air with their marker 2 yards away and surprise surprise when the pass comes in there is a challenge!!!

The last England team that played with better movment was venables/hoddle in the mid/late 90's, since then, pedestrian at best.

We don't have the quality of the Germans, the Spanish or the Dutch.

Like it or not the only way England will have any success at this tournament is by playing this way.

Really don't know why people expect miracles from a pretty mediocre bunch of footballers.

There's an old English saying.. 'you can't polish a turd' and it's pretty apt for this England squad. We seem to produce decent defensive minded players and goalkeepers but always lack players with genuine creativity and skill.

Except walcott who played like a demon...but was restricted by Defoe who got the day and smashed it towards the goal...regardless of angle or support!

It's funny how the expected standard of the England team has been lowered since Hodgson has been manager, Capello was expected to get to the semi finals with pretty much the same squad.

I'm not so sure it has much to do with Hodgson's appointment. Expectation and enthusiasm for the national team has been at it's lowest for a long time, since the 2010 South Africa debacle. Everyone knows what to expect from our lads... not much at all.

Personally, I think you should play to your strengths. Yes, we're crap with the ball by and large, but we will be tough to break down. With a bit of luck, and some creative set pieces, we can replicate Greece in 2004. Maybe.

Perhaps the penny is dropping that England have a good enough squad for quarter finals and anything beyond that requires a lot of luck. I think they'll play like Chelsea in Champs League as this is where their strength lies, and take it from there. Best league in the world but hardly any of the players that make it exciting are English.

It goes back to the last World Cup exit when everyone was taking a long hard look at the state of the national game and coming up with lots of sensible solutions none of which have or will be implimented as long as foreigners are in charge of all the big clubs. Grass roots goes out their window as club success is bought in.

It's a shame really as England really should have the ability to churn out quality players and a squad capable of winning the big trophies. Germany do it and their league and methods seem to work consistently well. I'd like England to do well with a squad that looks and plays good footie but the over hyped expectation placed on a bunch of decent but not great players seems to finally be easing, and they don't now go into tournaments expecting to win.

You could be worse at least you're in the tournament and have a league worth talking about!!

There's some quality individuals in that squad no doubt about that but after the last 2 games its clear to see that hodgson is setting that team up not to lose and to try and Nick a goal.

How many successful teams use 442,formation nowadays?

Roys tactics are a shambles and all of his media mates are backing him to "do a Greece".
If capello was doing the same he'd be hung drawn and quartered now, maybe its another case of racism against a world class foreign coach.

Because Roy is English he's getting an easy ride to these championships.

Pathetic really.

Given the amount of piss-taking Roy takes in the press for his speech impediment, I don't think he has many 'media friends'.

He is still getting criticism, for the negativity of the line ups, but christ, whats the point sending the team out to play like Brazil only to get opened up, like Germany did to us in 2010?

Don't quite get this. Capello crapped on the country and walked out of the job in a hissy fit leaving us in the mire and needing to appoint a new manager only months before the championships - racism against a foreign coach who couldn't win a one ticket raffle. Don't make me laugh!

I think they'll play like Chelsea in Champs League

If that's the case, I hope England's opponents play as poorly as Chelsea's did!

Also, send John Terry home...........................................NOW.
He's already causing us problems & England haven't even arrived at the tournament yet!
Cahill, a starting eleven centre back, is now out of the squad due to a double fracture of his jaw, great pity. So, who should be his replacement?
I know, a mid-table team's second choice right back! WTF!
If Terry had been injured instead, (if only),
I would bet my house that Rio Ferdinand would have got the nod, centre back for centre back, not rocket science. Problem is, despite being left out for 'football reasons' he has been overlooked, obviously not for 'Terry racially abused my brother' reasons then .
Terry is a blight on England and a blight on football..................there is no good in him at all.
Hopefully someone will 'do' him during a training session.

Come on England.

Slime.

P.S. Rant over.........................for now.

Very hard to work this one out , by no means a fan of Ferdinand but Kelly? How bout Micha Richards ?not great but better than kelly ? terry & lescott will be the pair , Jags will do a job if needed .. straighrt red for a centre back would make it squeaky bum time tho

He was sacked by the fa. This all stemmed from the fa interfering with football matters.

The teams performances in the world cup were poor but the qualifying record for this years euros was very good and he deserved a chance at the euros

To remain unbeaten throughout the qualifying stages is a very good achievement.

He may be a world class foreign coach but the performances in South Africa were beyond embaressing and he should have walked then.

To then qualify the team and walk out 3 months before the tournament was also pretty poor.

Hodgson has been thrown in at the deep end and is still in the honeymoon period. The "media mates" comment is very strange. I don't see that, and he certainly won't have many mates if England lose 3 from 3.

I think the lowering of expectations has been happening slowly for quite some years. Most sensible people have known for a while we aren't good enough to win anything, it just took a few people longer to realise!
