Looking to change my yearly tariff and from what I'm seeing all the best tariffs are dependent on having a smart meter fitted.

So unless you change to one of the smaller ,least known energy companies your obliged to have smart meter ?

We had one fitted about 9-10 months ago. We were with Scottish Power, we have just transferred to EDF. Yesterday a message came up on the smart meter saying welcome to EDF. Whilst they may not be compatible with all clearly those two talk to each other.

The govt are pressing the energy companies over the meter, it is not their fault to be fair.

3 years ago I had one fitted by Sainsbury's then I went British gas who own Sainsbury's so it still worked

Then ovo stopped working so they gave me a smart two metre that will work with anyone

Going to octopus next month

Then when I get my electric car can charge at night for 5p a kw

Might have to bite the bullet and see what happens.
My gas meter is outside and electric meter inside so how does that work.?

Two completely different metres so it's fine

Electric one is better as it's hard wired to the mains sends signal

Gas uses battery to send the signal

But their fine

I get break down on the appScreenshot_20201103-121357_OVO Energy.jpg to

Smart meters are blooming brilliant, the only bad thing is those stupid display things that come with them.

We have smart meters but no displays and couldn’t be happier. Those things were a massive screw up and caused so much e-waste.

The government just needs to get on the case of energy suppliers so we can just have all the data on our mobile phones, with alerts enabled etc. This needs to happen for water, gas and electricity ASAP. The savings will be huge but unless the government tells the energy companies to do it then for sure it will never happen.

As we discovered last night, it also means that we no longer have to go into a cold garage with a torch and write down what we think the reading is. A, it should communicate directly but b/ the meter reading is also found on the smart metre display itself in our warm and well lit kitchen.

That's the bit that I cannot get my head round, how will they be huge? We already turn off most things that are not needed, we still leave tele etc on standby and knowing what it costs is unlikely to change that. Lights are all changed to LED, thermostats on every radiator adjusted appropriately, 7 day time on main heating with 4 slots to alter it through the day, power shower will be removed from my family members cold dead bodies. What have you changed as a result of having the meter? To me it's just something else to go wrong.

I just moved to a supplier that doesnt do smart meter, but being able to get the readings off the unit in the kitchen is great, my meters are behind a big bush

Well it’s more around the alerts, so if you leave a hot tap running the app can alert you to the high usage, or if you go on holiday and forgot to turn the heating down.

I worked out accidents cost my family about £20-£30 a year at least on water, gas and electricity, kids sometimes just forget to turn things off so I check often.

Its all about trends and warnings, then add on behavioural changes to make the savings greater if not doing them already.

These are all against houses and family’s who do nothing of course, other than occasionally turn the heat down.

The more you already do the less savings will be.

I had smart meters fitted when I was with Scottish Power the gas one never worked. The electric one continued to work when I switched.
I am now back with Scottish Power after OFGEM closed down Tonik but only temporarily whilst my credit gets sorted out (hopefully).

Check out a company called “ look after my bills”, chuffed to bits with them for both gas and electric.

I did have a look but I prefer to check my own deals rather than give my bank details.to someone else.
Martin Lewis does.a similar scheme too.

I use the Cheap Energy Club on moneysavingexpert.com (the Martin Lewis one). Easy to look at all the offers including those that need you to have or install a smart meter.

Ironically we thought exactly the same, but at the end of the day. What’s the difference between giving your details to Eon, Scottish power, British Gas or to “ look after my bills” ?

The difference is that if you do it yourself and go through the likes of topcashback then you can get the cashback and not the switcher company. I'm due £140 for my switch last month.
