Electric Trolley Help

[Clueless]

Hi, more electrical than golf related but maybe someone can help me. Before I spend any money on a new control unit for an old e-caddy trolley I would like to be sure the motor works.
Is it safe to just connect it directly to the battery?
I've scoured the internet for what I thought would be commonplace advice but found nothing.
