Every Club golfer pays annual fees to the Englisg Golf Union as well as his own area Union.
At a time when Golf Clubs are losing members, many who previously had a waiting list to join now have no waiting , in fact many are removing their joining fee in an attempt to increase their membership.
These fees for 2012 have been increased by 10%, above the rate of inflation, do they not realise Clubs are struggling to survive.
What do we get for this £7million yearly income ?
The Home of Golf, situated in a most inaccessible area of the Country and permission to operate the handicapping system sees to be about it.
If there is more to it than this please advise.

Try the EGU website - this will tell you how your affiliation fees are spent.

Have already read the EGU web Site which doesn`t answer the question, I`ve been paying these fees for 25 years and never had anything back for them.

You've had nothing back personally but what about the enjoymant of watching all those terrific young english players coming through into the profesional ranks. They are all nurtured by the egu and we pay our little fee every year to be able to send these young kids all over the world to play in the top amateur events. Gaining experience and confidence.

Or would you rather we just sat back and let the Americans rule the world of golf.

I for one am glad we promote the cause of the young up and coming golfer and I get a tremendous amount of enjoyment watching them play golf through into the pro ranks.

Fully agree. Attended the Fairhaven Trophies which is a big Junior event earlier this year. These events don't just happen, they have a cost. It was a pleasure to see so many youngsters being tested on a great course with a top class field.

In the scheme of things the EGU fee is peanuts compared with a club membership. I don't think many clubs would suddenly reverse the trend if they cut fees by a massive five or six quid.

I assume you have had a handicap during those 25 years. The development and administration of handicaps is one element from which you have directly benefited. A huge amount of money is also spent on developing the science and techniques of course management and maintenance - this is something you won't see personally but all clubs benefit.

Really?Do they really??!!

Top Ams see a fair bit of return on the cash but tell me exactly what the bog standard club golfer gets directly in return for his fees over say a 30 year period....a free magazine each month?

Yes they do - really. What bit of my posting were you questioning?

Course management and maintenance.......directly?

Clubs maybe, if this is passed on and used (and it very very often isn't)but directly......no.

Name what they, the bog standard golfer benefits from directly outwith the monthly mag.

I'm struggling.

Directly very little though if you are looking for a Jaguar your benefits card entitles you to a substitutional discount.

But is that the point, the development of amateur golfers into pro's does not happen by chance but requires substitutional investment. I for one am sure we would not have the top two in the world without such investment.

Read my post - no mention of course management and maintenance directly affecting you.

Mis-read,apologies. ;)

My question stands though,I think it is not only I that is struggling to see what a bog standard golfer sees that is directly beneficial from his contribution.

OK, will admit that it is good seeing successful pros as a result of the EGU etc but why are we funding them. Now hear me out on this, should this sort of funding not work a bit like a student loan, golfers get financial support that they pay back when they earn over a certain amount. Suddenly the EGU becomes almost self funding.

Most formal sports have a national body who's responsibility is to "the game" rather than to the individual. Hence they do things for the benefit of the game as a whole rather than you or me personally. So EGO promote golf, encourage course management & development, and most importantly encourgage a develop youngsters into the game as players (some of whom may turn out to be world class pro's or perhaps just good amateurs) managers and greenside careers. A game that is desperately in need of young blood to safeguard its future should not begrudge a couple of quid on the annual sub. I certainly don't
