Ebay + PayPal = Con .........

Why didn't advertise it 20% higher. You knew about their fees.

Where items have an upper saleable limit it's detrimental to the chances of selling by adding to it. If you have a maximum sale value of, say, £100, any higher would make it unattractive. So adding 20% would decrease propensity to sell.
I personally see eBay as a bit of a market bandit but for me it's due to the charges for auction and the also charging for Paypal which they also own, effectively double charging. That's why it's a last resort for me.

I agree with the OP's argument, I think ebay charges are excessive. I have no idea how many items are sold every day on the site but over the course of a year it runs into multiple millions. I'm sure they could still make a decent profit (and possibly sell even more stuff) if they reduced their charges to 5%.

I think more things are being sold on gumtree these days, not sure how much they charge.

Great idea, bet they wish they had you in their business development department.

Oh wait, no...that would mean that there would be a need to DOUBLE productivity I.e sales before you even met last years figures!...plus the charges of eBay don't put me off so even if they did reduce it, I'd use it the same amount. You're telling me that by reducing costs you'd sell twice as much?

Clearly they will have conducted market research n how much to change, they've not picked that out of thin air. I think. Combined with PayPal, they provide a bloody good service. I've jus bought a printer cable and sat nav data transfer Cale for 99p each, deliver! I couldn't get that in a shop, factor on parking, petrol, time etc. but it took me 5 mins, ON MY MOBILE! To find, review and purchase both items.

Sorry...but con it is not...business..it sure is!

Prior to ebay acquiring Paypal, you could list without paypal being an option. You now have to list Paypal as an accepted payment. It does rankle that you are now being charged twice for the service by the one company.
Having said that, we know this in advance, so have the choice. I still use it to sell clubs as it,s convenient and you can list alot more info and pics than gumtree.
