Evening all.

Went to look at an '07 plate Audi A3 2.0TFSI Quattro today and my eye was instead drawn to a '56 plate Golf GTI with black leather and DSG 'box. I've read good things about DSG equipped cars, but does anyone have any real world experience of using one on a daily basis? Are they reliable? Do they cost loads to repair if/when they go wrong?

Any help on this would be much appreciated. (By my local car salesman as much as me, I'd imagine!!!)

Cheers. :)

Oops - should also probably have mentioned that the Golf is £3K cheaper than the Audi too!!

My cousin has it in his 05 Golf FSi and he loves it. He says there isnt the usual lag you get when accelerating thru the gears on auto.

From what I've read that's because there are 2 gearboxes and 2 clutches. Odd in one and even in the other.

The car decides which is the most likely gear you'll want next, and has it ready in the unused box.

Fantastic technology, but it sounds expensive to fix if it ever goes wrong.

I was tempted to go for it in the last car I bought, but I thought I'd just get lazy and drive everywhere on auto.
Plus, it wasn't available as an option on the model I wanted most.

That'll be me yea.
Owned a 1.4 ibiza then cordoba coupe 2.0 16v (hence the username) then a tweaked red 04 cupra. Have since gone Octavia vrs and now Impreza wrx.
I had a courtesy standard diesel octavia with the dsg fitted and wasnt overly impressed but still maintain its bloody good on a car fitted with a powerful engine where gear changes will be smoother with more torque in the background.

i'd take a long hard look... in fact i did... then i walked away.

have a look on this forum http://www.vagowners.co.uk/

there were enough stories of horrendous out of warranty repair bills to put me off buying a used one.

If i was buying brand new - or nearly new - i'd have on in a flash, but the potential for sudden expenditure on that magnitude (you're looking at well over a grand) put me off. It's the same reason i don't drive an Alfa 159.
