Just got 3 new shiny wedges 50, 54 & 58 and now I need to drop a club... was thinking of losing the 5-iron and choking down a 4-iron if necessary, or leaning on a 6 :D
My bag.....

9.5° runs out to 260+
13° runs out to about 260
17° runs out to about 230
20° runs out to about 210
4 iron - 195?
5 iron - 185?
6 iron - 175?
7 iron - 165?
8 iron - 155?
9 iron - 145?
P Wedge - 135?
50° - 125? + punchy bump and runs
54° - 115? + chipping
58° - 105? + bunkers
Putter - 60 feet

And I only just got the 13° and 17° too :D So i'd quite like to keep them in the bag too......... I could lose the 20° but that leave a big gap between 195/230

I've even considered dropping the wedge :D

What do you reckon?

lose the 17 degree, everything round it can compensate, losing an iron is a nono if you are trying to keep a uniform swing for your longer irons.

I guess it comes down to what you use the most mate.

My 3 wood is 15 deg, so I am ok with driver, 3 wood then my 19 deg hybrid, which gives me room for the 4 wedges!! :)

If you hadn't said you'd only just got the 13 & 17, I'd say swap those 2 for a 15.

I've got 15 too, and I leave one out for a couple of months then switch because I think the grass is greener, then that lasts a couple of months etc.

I'm with Region3 on this one. The 13 & 17 have really got to change to a 15 if you want a uniform gap through your bag. The main question should have been (before all the purchases) How hard is my course around the greens? Answer VERY then you may need a forth wedge NOT SO BUT QUITE TIGHT AND LONG then you may need the longer clubs to keep it in play and get to the greens.

My personal choice would have been to carry three wedges PW, 52 & 58) especially if you can hit a 58* wedge 105 (That's one hell of a hit) I'm no slouch and I think i'd have to blade mine to get it out to 105.

James,

You're a good enough player, why don't you drop the wedge, and choke down on a 9 if you want to get the distance in between the 9 and the 50.

There shouldn't really be any other shots that you can hit with a wedge that you can't manage with a 50 or a 9 in some way, shape, of form.

BTW, what wedges did you pick up?

I have a 54 and 58, and need something to close the gap between the wedge and 54, but have room in the bag for an extra club.

If your 13 runs out to 260ish then why do you need a driver? You're not going to get that much more from it are you? And even on a 450 yard par 4 (how many of those do you play?) you've got less than 200 in..

Or drop the 4 iron and 20 degree and get a 22/23 - you'll still get 200 out of one of theose.

That's exactly what I was going to suggest.
All joking aside, James hits his 3 wood further than most people hit the big dog, and his 5 wood, when flushed, is a thing of beauty.
I'd drop the Driver too. It's his short game that needs brushing up, not his distance off the tee. Hopefully his new wedges will go some way towards this

I'm with Smiffy and Imurg on this one. Drop the driver.
You could drop the 9 and choke on an 8 if you feel the driver is essential. Keep the PW deffo.

He needs a driver coz he wants to show off how long he is to the lady members. :o

I'd say either the 5I or the 8I can go in the short term, but when the lottery win comes in, then a more even gappage can be easily organised. I don't recall seeing either club come out of the bag too frequently recently.

Or some might suggest that he could always get off his backside, play less golf for a month and get on the computer to earn some dosh to sort it all out.

Odd you should be thinking about this. I'd like to introduce a 60* wedge but would need to drop a club. I was thinking 5 wood, but I reckon I have a far more cunning plan. I can happily take 10 yards off my 20* hybrid, so I'm toying with the idea of having just two rescue clubs to fill the 5/4/3 iron distances.

Does your putter count as a club? Surely it is only half a club or less?

It's 0.5 so that gets rounded up :)

I bought Ping Tour-W's, I just couldn't get on with the vokeys.. they felt too light and I always found I tried to add a bit more to every swing.

For reaching Par 5's in two, long par 4's and driving the greens on the shorter par 4's. I can also cut it off the deck if desperate. Last week I put one out at 368yds and can't do that with a 3 wood.

That sounds like a good idea, I think I'd rather keep my 5 and 4 iron for long par 3's and long approaches, I can always lean on a wedge or grip down an 8 for the 140ish shots... what's the worst that can happen at that range?

It's going to be a bit weird not having a 9 iron though which is why I was thinking of losing the wedge as I now have a 50°.

Redwood, I think some split testing between the wedge and 50° is in order. I think I'll drop the 9 in the mean time. Thanks.

It depends on the course you play but I think you've got a lot of clubs that go 195 yards+.

Do you really have that many shots that you need to hit those specific distances that accurately at those kind of distances?

It's a mental thing.

James ,
Drop the driver my friend..... thats a pretty strong lofted 13* 3 wood.....(Brassie i suspect ;))
Iv dropped my driver also as im straighter and probably longer with the 3 wood.....
Im not saying you have to but if my bag setup mirrored yours id get rid of the big fellow.....Plus laying up to those wedge yardages will really be a bit of fun...Trying different shots with the different lofts.
I personally would keep the 5I in the bag......
But what do i know :D :D

If you hit the 13* as far as the 9.5* why carry both? Would save all these gripping down antics with your irons if you retired one or other. Why not get a 10.5* instead?

I think he means that the 3W goes 260ish and the driver goes a bit looooonger.

Not much of a one for playing cautious golf at the moment, is our Jamie. If he'd play using course management he'd rip the place apart any day soon, but it's like talking to a deaf git. I SAID DEAF GIT

The thing is, his place is tight, so a lot of tee shots are restricted to the 3W or 4W. But he plays a lot of nomad golf, and on the open spaces he likes to try to kill wild animals and passing dog walkers.

Basically, the man's a menace. :(
