I have just invested in a 3m * 3m golf net so I can work on my swing in the gardens of Woo Towers.
What I now need is a mat to hit off.
Anyone recommend a good mat, or should I attemp to make one with astroturf or use carpet?

The problem with most range mats is they are as hard as your wife after coming home with lipstick on your collar...anyway I digress...depending on your budget there are some great mats out there that will be easier on your joints and will respond a bit more like turf. Something like the true strike mats for example

I understand there are some benefits of praciticing a swing and strike, but if you can't tell what direction the ball would have gone in, how does anyone get the best out of thse mats any way? Forgive my ignorance... I may be missing something obvious.

mats and nets at home are great if you are trying to ingrain specific moves into your swing that need repetition.
Like trying to fix an over the top swing for example.

Set you props up on the mat (bobs drill) and keep hitting balls into the net without hitting the props... saves loads of money on range balls over the winter.

A mistake I have made in the past.... some of the cheaper ones are advertised as driving / chipping mats.
These disintergrate within half an hour if you play full iron shots off them.
You need to be weary of that

Having said that they are handy if you want to see if you are taking turf before or after the ball :)
