Driving....is it still fun?

Depends where you are.. one of the few benefits of living in Norfolk are a few nice roads with little on them. I love a deserted B road and dropping down a gear or two - it's a shame that's like saying you like fascism these days (I don't before anyone gets all Daily Fail on me). Mainly driving is just one long frustration however in many parts as traffic gets ever worse...

Except the new breed of rear facing average speed cameras that are now spawning across long lengths of road might put a dent in your fun;)

The sort of roads on which you'd normally find those down our way are not the sort of roads you'd want to take a bike out to play on, not sure if thats the same everywhere though, although it isn't compulsory to break the speed limit in order to have fun on two wheels ;)

The other option of course is to adopt the "Autostrada technique" beloved by the Italians :D

99% of the time driving is great fun, 1% it is not as going to the city centre and that is bonkers

Usually off to do something pleasant and there are some amazing roads here that can only be described as race track ready...

Best bit is when there is snow on the mountain, you can tool it up to around 7000 feet sliding around on the white stuff

There is not a car on this earth that could make a commute to work fun

Nope. Tis nothing but a chore these days. Traffic everywhere, forever having to watch out for all the idiots. Nothing more than a means to an end.

Have used public transport on our last two holidays and loved it!

Catania?! If you're driving in Catania you're mad as a box of frogs on speed!

I still love driving. Heavy traffic and idiots take the gloss off it a bit, but I'd still rather be driving than on public transport or a passenger in a car.

As a kid I loved to drive and most of my working life has involved driving a lot of the time.

I wouldn't care if I never had to drive another single mile.

The relentless attack on motororists is nothing short of pathetic. And before I'm accused of being a boy racer I have only ever had one ticket in a 40 year + driving career, and that was back in 2000 when doing 43 somewhere I had thought was 40. It transpired to be 30.

I have gone everywhere - and I mean everywhere - at prescribed speed limits this past 10 years and that itself is stressful. Just look in your rear view mirror at those 'patiently' following behind you if you too decide to give it a try.

Back in the 80s I drove through London every day and apart from the heavy traffic I loved it. Nowadays it's jams, cameras, zones and box junction mayhem. The last time I took a car to central London was at least 5 years ago and I prefer to let the train take the strain.

It helps ensure my zero points status and saves me the stress of me spending half the time looking at my speedo and not out the windscreen at the road where my eyes need to be; or having to interpret 6 road signs at each junction or getting home and wondering what is following me in the post because I was unable to take everything in amidst the information and regulation overload.

So I'm with the OP. Driving ain't no fun no more no how.

After dropping out of the corporate oil burners merry go round this year, I bought a new style Mini Cooper.

Loads of fun, not particularly fast but I find I try to take back roads more and more often when I'm in it

Love my car, and driving it. Of course I never red line it.

Yes Catania.

If you know this area you have probably been along the Lungomare, there was a big accident there perhaps a year ago, i was driving along the road and police had turned it into a single lane road and were periodically allowing cars from each direction to move along. Thing is many just thought fk it and drove along the new bike lane and THROUGH the accident! over glass etc.. no one was hurt from what i understand but there were several really smashed up cars and a bus !

To be fair I am totally used to it and it is not actually stressful for me as it might be for a visitor, my problem is driving in the UK, as i am not used to stopping at red lights (If nothing is coming what would a light bulb dictate what you do:?) , speed cameras, actual laws as oppossed to guidlines, giving way at roundabouts (Does not apply here, rule is just keep moving and make eye contact with the person you think is most likely to hit you)

Most of the time i am hooning it up the side of Etna which is like a race track as you are probably aware, snow is dropping high up, counting the days until it is on the road and some serious sliding action can take place!

If you want 'fun' get a Motor Cycle!

Cars are for convenience!

But yes, there's still pleasure to be had driving a car! the A82 from Loch lomond to Fort William is certainly an example!

Just remember that your 'fun' could endanger the lives of others!!

Quite agree, driving is tedious to say the least, never been one for cars and much prefer my bikes but even they can become a chore due to the heavy volumes of traffic on the roads these days that and the flaming speed cameras, coppers hiding behind every other lamp post, turds who REALLY shouldn't be allowed to drive or at least need to be reassessed, generally the whole concept of driving/riding the 'open road' has become a complete drag...🙄

You need the right environment more than you need the right car or bike, I practically live on a race track (Foot of a big mountain) no speed cameras, sweeping bends, hairpins, the snow will shortly be on the upper sections (I like driving in snow a lot) no fancy car required, but there are quite a lot of people who rent a ferrari or lambo from the city and rip up the mountain...

Could not do it in the Uk, you would lose your license

In N. Wales if you can drive within the limits, it can still be fun.

I car-cam'd my drive through Snowdonia in a sports car and barely popped over the limit (for more than a split second) which is basically 60mph.

However, they will do you for the smallest infringement in the last sections of any speed limit they want. I think they've worked out that the middle of villages are meagre pickings, which is a good sign in fairness. I have no problem with that.

So, taking any liberties (such as overtaking a Sunday driver who wants to travel all 50 miles at 40mph) is highly risky.

Enjoy the roads responsibly and don't expect any tolerance. If you have to exceed the speed limit to overtake, it won't take long for a £100 fine to arrive through the post as the road are littered with camera vans.
Never anticipate the change of limit from 30-40-60.... not until you have crossed the line.

If in doubt, always drive with a Sat Nav set to 'speed limit' and not 'speed limit + 3 mph'.

Still some awesome roads out that way. Small and lithe beats large and powerful.

That sounds seriously grim, cameras, limits, fines..

Driving isn't fun any more, that's why I fitted a dashcam for the day when some idiot (who is exempt speed limits) drives into me.
When, not if
