Without seeing your swing its hard to tell. It may be a positioning issue or more likely an out to in swing meaning that when you catch the ball well you'll impart left to right spin resulting in the slice and if you are slightly off with the swing you'll catch it on the heel.

My advice would be to look at the grip, posture, alignment and ball position but in reality a quick lesson with a pro will give you the answers you need and the fixes.

Is it a new club? How long is the shaft?

I struggled with this with my Ping G5. Every damn one....very frustrating.

I had mine cut down to the same length as my other drivers (45") and the same as all my old drivers from the 1990s (BB, Bubble Burners etc.)

Mine worked out OK.

Could be a balance issue (like a sh*** with irons), but these are only my personal problems....

yep starts left then goes right
Ok. There are 2 issues here
1. the swing is out to in
2. the clubface is pointing to the right at impact.

1. If you look down at the ball and imagine its a clockface, at the moment you are striking the ball about 1-2 o'clock. Try and hit it where the 4 or 5 is i.e. bottom right corner. That should improve your swing path.

2. try and be aware of the clubface at impact pointing at your target. This will stop the ball spinning to the right in the air.
Sometimes when practicing on the range, place your headcover a foot behind the ball and 2 inches to the right when looking down the line.
If you hit the headcover, your still swinging out to in.

i'll be trying the same tonight, cheers bobmac - as informative as ever :)

on another point.... my pro is very reluctant to spend time on my driver during lessons. having played for about a year now i had a fair few lessons to begin with and a few around xmas as a brush up.
basically i'm at the stage where i'm hitting my irons consistently well with a slight draw but i'm struggling to get the same shape with the driver. i'm thinking of going to another pro to get a lesson on my driver alone as we always go back to the 7iron and end up tweeking that slightly. which isn't really what i want - i know my swing isn't perfect with the irons but if the shop shape/results is what i want i'm happy to move on.

i understand his point - get the irons spot on and transfer it to the driver but i just can't do this.

you think i should try to get a 2nd opinion? different advice from someone to cure my driver issues?

Short answer, it's your money. take it where you get the lesson you think you need.

I've had lessons from four pro's, mostly because lessons are pricey round here so I'm looking for value for money. They do talk essentially the same language but some put it across better or more effectively than others.

I'm fairly settled at the moment, but unfortunately they don't have a short game area so it may be back to the more expensive for what is some essential work.

as an un qualified numty my pro told me a great routine to get me used to bringing the hands up the inside instead of over the top and out to in;

set up to the ball normally to play at a target directly in front of you and open your stance with your feet quite a bit whilst keeping the shoulders square to the target - yes I'll repeat that - open your stance,
Now play your shot at the same target as if you had set up normally and try to hit the ball at the target driving the club head towards it. Keep doing it until you can play the ball at the target and even get a little draw on the ball.
Now gradually bring your stance back towards square.

By doing this you have forced your hands up the inside close to your body which is a feeling most slicers find very difficuilt to do because you don't know what it feels like but you will now know the feeling.

Each to their own but it really helped me.

I'm fairly sure its because your clubface is still open at impact. That will cause your sidespin and high ball flight too
