I learnt at a demo day last year that lower loft doesnt necessarilly mean further distance, good shaft flex and launch angle with less backspin is the best. see if there are any vector or vectra systems something like that "not 100% sure of the name"around you and they will measure launch angle ball speed etc and fit the best combination for you.
lol all play well:)

I got my Rapture driver fitted by Ping and I am a 12 degree loft. Would never in a million years have bought a 12 degree off the shelf so it just shows you. I think I averaged 8.5 yards longer with the 12 compared to 10.5. I was also producing less spin and my dispersion rate was 12 yards less than the 10.5.

Quite staggering and I love my driver. Money and time well spent.

Everyone's different but "in theory" depending on optimum launch, probably 8-ish yards.

I've read the science (found it once on t'internet, never since) and it's interesting reading. For an average swing speed with medium launch, there are results to show that more loft will increase the carry.

My "ideal" loft would be 12, but because I hit it a bit high (more on the up), I was advised for 11, but chose 10.5. However, if I improve my swing in the way that I want, then this will almost certainly be not lofted enough.

I was told or read or heard on Setanta that more loft = less backspin, which means more carry and also helps if you're prone to a slice. Not sure how true that is. My r7 is 11.5, certainly get more distance but I suspect that's largely due to all round better quality, particularly the shaft.

My Orka is a high loft and that has all but killed of my slice. Previously tried 10.5 degree burner and R7 460 and could not hit either one straight. Do not seem to be hitting it short either.

Maybe so, Viscount, not sure, but not the only factor.

I had spin rate of 1500 revs on my old stiff shafted 10.5 degree driver, resulting in low, low ,low runners and duck hooks. Carry was only 200 yards.

New regular shafted 10.5 degree upped the backspinspin to 2500 revs and added 30-35 yards carry that day. More now that I'm used to it.

I've never been checked out on a monitor that measures backspin - it would be interesting to see the results, though what it proves I've no idea. I might ask around to see where there is one.

I've had swing speed measured, which is quite low - mid 80's to low 90's - and I can hit it reasonably long - best ever was 280 but usually 220 - 240.

Is there ever a case were a regular shaft would suit a high swing speed?

I only ask cos every time I hit my mates superquad which is 10.5 with regular shaft its straight and long.

Yet swing speed was measured at an average of 106-108 at St Andrews which means a stiff shaft should suit me better by rights!?

Possibly, HH.

I think the point is that all regular shafts are not the same. Some may be stiffer than others.

My swing speed with driver was around 103mph+ when I was being fitted for it by the Titleist Fittingworks Van.

I needed an inch off regular length and he strongly suggested the Graphite Design regular shaft. Got the ball in the air better with more backspin, which I needed.

Just go with what gives the best results. Too many of us are hung up with the Extra Stiff Shaft machismo rubbish. I'd play a ladies shaft if I hit it longer and straighter.

John, how true this statement is. I’m 32, play off 8 and use a 10.5 Degree Ping G5 with a regular shaft and I hit it really well. However despite this you’d be amazed at how much flack I still get on the course from my playing partners for playing a “ladies shaft”. Muppets !!!!

DHM,

I tell you what. THE best display of driving the ball I've EVER seen was Jezz Ellwood on Friday. I believe he has a 10.5 degree reg shaft like the both of us.

100% fairways and probably 270+ every time. Beautiful ball flight. We were joking with him by the 6th that it was getting boring. Oh, to be that boring! Who needs the macho shaft when you're doing that?

The days of low loft are disappearing except for very windy days of links golf. With golf ball technology these days you want to hit it high, the quicker it gets in the air the more spin you can create which gives you more hang time resulting in more distance. v singh was using a 13degree driver for most of last season. But remember you still need to hit the shot.

Just recently been fitted ofr a new driver, I went through a few shafts before coming to the one I chose in the end.

Back to a regular shaft for the first time in a few years. Took it to the range last week and was impressed and played on Sunday and hit a few good ones, certainly better that those of the old driver!

It is certainly worth the effort to get your driver fitted. Prior to this buy, I wouldn't have dreamed of it, but now... well the proof will be in the stats this season I hope.
