Do you really, honestly, 100% want to get better at golf?

Better.....Yes.......Definitely.......Im one of those people that have to get the best out of myself no matter what i throw my hands at.....
I do it in my job,Iv done it in all the sports iv played and Golf will be no different.....I get a kick out of getting better....My playing partners are constantly ripping the piss out of me for it...Im usually the one thats on the receiving end of their little snide jokes but i dont mind.....Handicap is a measure of your ability and how good you are getting.....And ill have the last laugh with them though as we all started off roughly the same handicap but its me that dropping and not them....Not because they are worse than me....But because im applying myself to learning how to play better and get better....I have to laugh at them sometimes to myself.......

They think im obsessed and to a point maybe i am but i think that this is what separates those that know they have the ability to achieve what he wants......
Im one of the above mentioned and i WILL have the last laugh with them :)

Absolutely....and working pretty hard to achieve that at the moment too! Fortunately I enjoy going to the range and working on things.....plus although not as bad as I used to be I am still stupidly competitive.

Yes absolutely, because it is such a good feeling when the shot comes out exactly as I planned and I want to have that feeling on a regular and, indeed, frequent basis. Also, I want to be able to play on better courses.

I've only been playing since Jan last year and my handicap kept getting higher the first few months but then I started to play a little better and got cut. What a feeling that was and now I want to go as low as possible. I think its only natural to want to better ourselves and I'm no different .

For 9 months I had a single digit handicap. Vanity maybe, but I liked having it. I want it back. Other than that, no, not really. If I could make money from it, that would be different, but I never will. A solid 7 would do for me.

yes. i want to get down to single figures from 12. moved 4 shots last summer. my dream round would be level par. personal best is +6 !

Like many I enjoy the friendly rivalry and banter. It's a battle of wits, will and determination in an effort to seek perfection but like every other good plan it's flawed as perfection is a perception that hovers on the verge of reality but in truth will never be achievable.

I'm not really bothered to be honest. The enjoyment is being out in the fresh air,in good company, and sharing a joke or two over a pint afterwards.Any win using handicap allowance is hollow imo,the best golfers are the best golfers at the end of the day.

Nope.

I'd like to improve. But I don't want to get any worse!

I've been lower and know what's involved/required to get back there, but haven't got the resources to be sufficiently dedicated to do so.

I'll let my handicap maintain my 'competitiveness' (I'm a huge fan of the handicap system) and allow me to enjoy the other benefits of the game - the company, the exercise and the scenery.

Yes I'd like to get better but I'm not sure I'd enjoy playing off a really low handicap. When I played against Bob at Thetford and he was hitting every fairway and pretty much every green it just didn't look as much fun. He played the course really well but only seemed to get a rush from birdies. I'm at a stage where I can still get a rush from a bogey if I hit a woeful tee shot on a challenging hole. I think 8/9 would be a nice handicap. Low enough to mean you were half decent but high enough that the each game would still have plenty of highlights...

... That said when I get to that level I know I'm going to want to be cat 1!!!

Personal achievement. I've never been athletically gifted so have had to work hard to succeed in sport. Managed to do *ok* playing American Football and discovered that hard work and effort will reap you rewards. I've been playing golf for nearly 20 years (on and off) - but seeing me play, you wouldn't think it. Most of my close mates that play golf are off low-teens or single figures and I hate being the runt of the litter so I figure it's time to do something about it. Worked hard the last year to try and get some consistency back and I figure if I can shoot Sub-90 in sub-zero temperatures as I did at the weekend, I have a shot at a cut or two this year.

Would I like to be a cat 1 golfer? Of course but I'd be just as happy (probably) getting down to low teens or single figures. Once I get there, I may find I'm not satisfied and will want to push on but as it stands, I'd be happy with low-teens! I absolutely HATE playing off 19 and when I'm not playing in club comps, I refuse play off 19 as being given two shots on a hole doesn't sit right with me - I might be short changing myself, but I have high expectations of myself and those expectations include being able to win a hole without having to use a two shot advantage.

Also, I hope that one day I'll be able to live down the shanked drive that Richart so kindly keeps reminding me about :D

yes.........

i'd love to be as good as i could be.whether that was 3,scratch or better.the thing is we will never know i suppose unless you devoted all your time to the game and practised all the time.

if i was told, that is the best you will ever be then i'd accept that but not knowing makes me want to do better and get lower.i think we get a rough idea from our own game whether or not we could be better.

A bit better for now. Mainly building a game that can be kept ticking over with one or two games a week and maybe one range session. Realistically, that's all I'm going to be able to devote time-wise. So, maybe a 7 hcp is my limit. But who knows?

My reasons for wanting to improve are that I just like trying to be good at things, especially sport. Probably vanity.

Yes I want to improve.
But not so that I can attain a certain target, because in golf your targets always move.
To say that you want to get down to, say, single figures and then you'll be happy is generally not true.
Your taget will move, you'll go from a target of 9.4 to cat 1, and so on.

I want to improve so that I can keep enjoying the game, because I think that once you plateau it gets hard to want to play. I know this from previous experience when I couldn't get past 9.
I came back to the game and have steadily improved, except for much of L/Y, and have enjoyed it more as a result.
