Just wondered if anyone here works at their club. Full/part time or volunteer on their club committee, club sec etc etc.
Do you think it's worth the agro you undoubtedly get and is it a thankless job?

I did a stint on the Committee at my old club and to be honest it was a pain in the rear and a waste of time. The Management of the club didn't take on board anything we came up with, decided, agreed or disagreed with.
We had comps played over Saturday and Sunday, you could choose which to play but the deadline for declaring was 6pm Friday. One weekend, one of the Life Members was supposed to be away so he didn't declare for the weekend. AS it happens he didn't go and turned up on the Sunday to play. Most of the members had played on the Saturday as there was a big friendly match on the Sunday - tee-off about 12. AS we walked up to the first, there's Mr Life Member coming in spouting about the round of his life in the Medal - hold the Phone, you didn't declare, we said. So at the next meeting on the wednesday we unanimously agreed a DQ due to not delacring for the Comp.

Management contacted us all within 24 hours to insist on re-instatement or there would be consequences...

I left soon after..

Been on committee for 12 of the last 14 years. Done, House, H'caps, Comps, Greens, Capt, and now as an underling on Greens. Obviously I enjoy it or I wouldn't do it.

There are some members who you know will whinge, and there are some who just what to know what's happening. My stock answer for the whingers is "put it in writing." And if I'm out playing and someone comes over they get a "xxxx off, see me when I get in." Most people are sensible enough not to approach me on the course, and most others know its not wise.

I spent 5 years on our committee. There were members who never contributed one useful comment in that time. I finally decided not to stand after abuse from certain members who didnt like decisions that the committee had made and vented their anger on any committee member whether or not they were party to the particular decision.

The final nail in the coffin was when 2 members of the committee decided to ignore the R and A, Congu and all other advice on a handicap matter so that they would get their own way and not appear to lose face

I went back to doing more committee work for my football club, and, at least, they appreciate what I do!

Competition Secretary Bob, and this place is a goldmine of info for me!

I don't mind doing it, ours is a happy little club with not many issues. Management listen to our requests most of the time and the rest of the committee are a good bunch.

I'd say to every member to do a year on the committee to see how it works at least.

I've often thought of helping out in our junior section as am the father of 2 members of it but never do. Always cite time commitment as the main reason but really can't be @rsed as I see a lot of parents not interested in their child's development and would be expected to mind them... Oh and the police checks may be a problem ;)

Have run one of the junior teams for the last 3 years. Am currently on the competitions sub-committee. Between the comps chairman and I, we have dragged the membership (some kicking & sqealling) into the 21st century by utilising the Club 2000 system the club has. 99% of the membership are happy with the new way, just a few "old farts" that still moan :) :)

I am also Secretary for one of the Surrey based Junior Leagues

I've never done it, as I'm not sure it's legal for the under-40s to sit on golf club committees?

But I have respect and thanks for all on here who do it... I'm sure it's literally a thankless task. Everyone's a critic but nobody once to stand up and do it themselves, I'm sure.

I've done a little bit of work on communication and getting information out to members in a more user friendly and timely manner but I'd love to get more involved with other aspects of the club. Heck I spend enough time there already I might as well do something constructive

One of the gents in our group has just been selected for our committee. Should mean our input is listened to fairly in future.

Remember in Goodfellas, where Pesci is being made up? De Niro and Liotta are sat around nervous, and it "feels as though we were being made up too" - that's how we all feel about it.

Well, sort of.

I hope they don't make him up the way Pesci was made up...
