Personally I wouldn't bother. Open up a 58, or even a 56 and you'll still be able to get the "lofted" results you're after, admittedly it needs a little practise ;)

I had a lob wedge for a while and (for me) it was a wasted club. The instances where I needed to lob the ball up in the air were so few and far between the lobber didn't justify it's place in the bag. To be honest I tend to find that the majority of the chip shots I leave myself are better suited to 'bump and runs' with and 8 or 9 iron. They're also much easier to execute than a mickelson style lob shot.

Just my 2 penneth.

UP1.

Right now i'd go with a gap wedge, something between 50-54 degrees if you are to purchase anything. Suggest you go second hand then your not laying out loads of cash for something you may decide you don't want.

You would be better off (IMO) having a lesson or 2 on your short game and asking a Pro the best way forward.

I like my lob wedge (won it in a raffle), it's my go to for bunkers and those shots close in to the green. getting better with it though I'd like to be able to get those short sided one's to drop more often.

It's the same story the world over. :)

Hi,
I was in exactly the same situation a few months ago, I was struggling with my short game, and after seeing better players using a lob wedge ( hitting high lofted shots from 40yds and landing them on a sixpence)I conviced myself I needed one.

So I went out a got a 60degree, easy to hit? you must be joking, I can play two shots with it,

1- thin it, so it runs right through the green about 40 yds past.
2- it goes miles up in the air, then drops about 10yds in front of me.

I now use it out of the sand only, very well I must add, I can really slice the sand out from beneath it. I use my sand and pitching wedge for the rest of my close approach shots now.

I figure when my game gets to a decent level I might be able to use it.

So to sum up, DONT BOTHER

Bushfinder the 60 degree wedge is a great club, however its important to have one with the right bounce that suits the ground ur playing off.if you have tight lies or you play on a links that are generally drier you need a club with a low bounce ie a 4 bounce,if its softer maybe an 8 or 10.I use mine for any shot up 2 85yds if theres no wind, the most important thing is to take a divot this will help you stop the ball dead,or maybe a bit of spin.the thing is when you master it you will love it.

Since mastering a lob wedge is a lifetimes work, I can't be bothered. I putt well, so if I can get on the green with any club, I'll take it. With the LW, I could fat it, thin it, spoon it into a bunker, leave it short, get stupid amounts of spin, get no spin, go straight underneath it, all sorts. With a PW or a 54, I can guarantee to get on the putting surface, and generally near enough. Unless I have got the shanks, when nothing will help.

I think I've maybe got too hang up on how I'm getting there, and perhaps lost sight of the fact that it's enough to just get there at all. I'll work on my pitching wedge and try to master that before worrying.

Cheers guys.

My pro says one doesn't need one (unless you play on tour, he agreed with that) and if you do then there's something else that needs fixing... course managemant
