Those of you who remember I was diagnosed with diabetes about a month ago with a blood sugar count of 24.6 (the acceptable level should be 4-7) and I was asking for advice for what to eat/drink.

In the bad (or was that good) old days I'd have had a lucozade or powerade drink, a fruit bar and a banana to keep me going. Clearly these aren't options anymore but after a bit of trial and error I have found a new regime.

I take a 750ml bottle of water and find that big swigs every 3 holes keeps me hydrated and lasts until the 18th tee. I have found a lower sugar fruit bar which I can take (apparently I burn a large % of the sugar off as I'm walking and playing). I can also have a banana but it must be as green as possible (less natural sugars apparently).

I did try taking a packet of mix seeds (pumpkin, sunflower) but found it too fiddly to keep stopping and getting them out of the bag and then wrapping them so they didn't spill out.

The good news is that I've been on medication (1 tablet - 1/2 after breakfast + 1/2 after evening meal) and by controlling my diet (no sugar in tea, no cakes etc) my last blood reading this evening is down to 8.2

Many thanks for all your support and suggestions over the last few weeks they were greatly appreciated. For those that also took the time and trouble to PM me my heartfelt gratitude. It is great to know there are people I've never met that care enough to take the trouble to write a few words.

I am feeling much better on the way round the course now and don't feel as tired on those crucial final holes. If they could just invent a pill to cure my golf game as easily I'd be a happy camper. Still its good to know when I smash it into trouble on the 16th I still have the energy to forage in the thick stuff!!!

Once again many thanks for all your encouragement

Well done, Diabetes runs in my family so I prick my finger at work every now and again to check things Ok. Its good to know we are all their for one another when things are not all OK.

I found a recipe for that Weetabix cake I was banging on about

http://www.circlecity.co.uk/kitchen/recipes/weetabix_cake.php

I use to live on this stuff when I was competing full time, you can add all different things like cranberry chunks etc

Homer mate that's top news. Glad too see you took it so well mate. Always nice to hear people over coming there problems rather than giving in too them.

Hope the extra energy improves the golf!

Top suggestion but not allowed to eat the smarties first. Not sure I want to give them to HID all that sugar might make her frisky and I can't have her depleting my energy reserves for golf.

Actually joking apart I'm going to give that a go. Thanks for that

Homer great that you are keeping better.I am and have been a type 1 diabetic for 8 years now and the biggest danger I have is my Sugar levels going low during a round and suffering a Hypo thro it which aint good at all.I have found that starting off the round with a sugar level of 8ish and then sipping a Powerade drink thro the 18 keeps my sugar fairly constant,I am glad I have type 1 as opposed to your type 2 diabetes as I do not have to watch so closely what I eat I just need to match the carbs intake with what I then inject insulin wise which is a very free regime to be on indeed and suits my lifestyle needs but I do tend to stay away from all the sugary stuff (apart from ale!).Hope things continue to go well for you.

Always used to take big tube those from christmas (fruit gums) or fill it with unsalted peanuts.
Its only your bodies way of saying slow down and think about what you eat.
Found that the apple I took on with me were raising my sugar levels, now no more wild trees growing in the rough.

hi mate,

well done and keep up the +ve attitude. one thing i would advise (as a healthcare professional) is learn all you can about diabetes. the people who struggle with the condition and its possible associated secondary health implications is mainly due to ignorance and an unwillingness to accept and take responsibility for their condition. a simple search on google reveals many great people (including top athletes) have diabetes and it certainly hasn't stopped them achieving their goals.

all the best!

Got to say I tried the weetabix cake HT recommended on the link above. HID was off today so kindly made it while I was at work. Apparently it smelt terrible as it was prepared and looked vile as it was poored into the tin. Got to say though once cooked it was gorgeous. Firm around the edges and soft and sticky in the middle

HTL many thanks for that. Do you know how much I can eat without knackering my blood sugar (I know there is minimal sugar in the recipe). Do you know what sort of energy boost it provides.

Thanks for that I really appreciate your help. Got HID baking another one to take to work.

Glad it was OK Homer, Don’t know any information regarding sugars etc I will hand it over to one of the Nutrition geeks at work when I get back.

Remember you can always play about with the ingredients such as cinnamon, nutmeg, raisons, berries etc.

Keep me posted HTL as I'd love to know. You said you lived on this stuff when you were competing. When did you eat it? Was it before during or after.

HID has another one in the oven now ready to take to work
