Take as much help as they will give you and also get applications in for new jobs asap. There will be others from your work going for the same jobs so try to get applications in asap.

+1 look for a new job asap. My friend got made redundant, and within a week had new job lined up.

Depends what line you are in Dotty and to a certain extent your age.

I once had over 200 applicants for a golf course mechanics job.
It was heatbreaking reading the applications.
The guy we chose was massively over qualified but he loved the job. he was good at it and therefore enjoyed very little subervision.
Sometimes doors do open in an unexpected way.
It happened to me when a job did not work out for me. I chose a different direction and had a very fulfilling career.

You may have to step back to go forward, life is tough right now so don't be too fussy.
Good luck and keep positive.
Ever thought of running your own business?

I'm in the same position as you Dotty, hence me not attending the Ballyliffin meet last week.

I get my brown envelope at the end of June.

The only jobs in the automotive trade round here are for grease monkeys @ 15K less than I earn as a Diagnostic specialist.

I think I'll have to play golf all summer and get a job stacking baked beans come winter-time.

I'll join the little club here, tomorrow is my final day after my consultation period.

Not sure what I'm gonna do yet, have finished some retraining that was paid for and now have domestic installer electrical qualifications and waiting for some more results for inspection qualifications. Not 100% sure if I'm gonna change jobs but it was/is an avenue for thought.

Trained as a software engineer, but have been team leader-requirements manager-planner for the majority of my current role. Just taking some chill out time before committing myself.

Was in the same situation 9 years ago, did some courses of my own back, did my RGIT Survival which cost £700 at the time , companies like to see people who get of there back end and show initative. Luckily i got a job after 2 months with an Oil company and am still there to this day.

Good luck and stick in.

I was made redundant in 2008 and all that I could do was cut back on the expenditure and hope for the best. I applied for any job even if it meant a long commute or even living away from home during the week. Luckily found a job after 3 months. It involved a 3 hour round trip to work and back but it kept me employed and kept the money coming in for a couple of years. Once the market improved I could start looking for jobs closer to home and after 2 years I found one. It is not easy but I was willing to take any job as I have always believed that it is always easier to find a new job when you have a job already.

If you end up in a position where you are still searching but have had your last day try and do some volunteer work in something you find interesting. It will help you re-enter the job market as employers will look favourably upon you keeping active and may even open a door for you. Good luck with it all

Been made redundant twice now... Using modern vernacular my advice would be to start 'networking' as soon as! Many jobs just don't make the 'open market' so, in my experience, using your contacts, relations, friends, former workmates, anybody really to find info on any possible employment is the most likely way to get another job... Be prepared to take casual/temporary work as well... As has already been said employers seem more interested if you are currently employed rather than 'enjoying gardening leave'...

I was made redundant last year but fortunately I had worked there 30 year and had a pension, so I could afford to take early retirement.
Use the 90 days, they have to let you go for interviews.

I work with people being made redundant every day as internal redeployment is one of my roles. It's heartbreaking but it's also sad when people don't take opportunities because they think it is below them. Being offered a £19k job when you're on £28k is surely better than nothing?

Keep your head up, use lots of job sites, I recommend indeed.co.uk as its free lots of smaller sites use it. If you are in the north west area and looking at local govt try www.yourcounciljobs.co.uk, also regionally there is, www.eastmidlandsjobs.org.uk, www.southeastjobs.org.uk, www.northernjobs.org.uk and www.southwestjobs.org.uk.

Be aware that there may be more than just you applying for jobs and try to Taylor your application/cv to each job so it doesn't become stagnant and it keeps your mind doing something. Volunteering is a great shout as well.

My philosophy is to at least try as accepting a lower paid job for 6 months Ina different role may open up more possibilties in the long run

Been through it twice and it doesn't get any easier. Get the word out to your current customers and contacts, use the golf club and your playing partners and generally spread the net as far and wide as you can. My advice is not to be too choosy and what may seem something way out of your field may actually have attributes you already have and so could dove-tail you into the role nicely. I went into the FMCG sector with a company called IRI Infoscan. I had no idea what they did or how payroll/HR skills would help but I was dealing with the fieldworkers who go into the supermarkets and scan the shelves. The key was organisation and people skills to get the paperwork to them on time and get them into the store and deal with issues they had. It wasn't my ideal job, but it was a job and the thing is employers are much keener a lot of the time to look at someone currently in work (harsh but true) and so it gave me the breathing space to find something much more akin to my skills and what I wanted to do
