Our local one - all of 5mins drive away - is superb. Fabulous indoor and outdoor facilities - but expensive. That's Surrey for you I suppose. My wife has been an occasional member but she just doesn't use the facilities it provides and that she paid for to justify the cost.

David Lloyd is expensive; Surrey is more expensive. 👍

From Harvard medical:
"In a study done at the University of British Columbia, researchers found that regular aerobic exercise, the kind that gets your heart and your sweat glands pumping, appears to boost the size of the hippocampus, the brain area involved in verbal memory and learning. Resistance training, balance and muscle toning exercises did not have the same results."
Which goes on to recommend brisk walking. One hour twice a week. Which also means you save on gym membership, travel costs, gels and so on.
How many people do I see driving to the gym, when they could have walked.
You may also have heard of the South African man who walked his way through Parkinson's disease, after being diagnosed with it 50 years ago.
So we will just forget baiut the positives of reostancd training, like reduce risk of osteoporosis due to increasing bone mineral content, greater overall otection for joints, improved insulin sensitivity, greater chance in reducing visceral fat plus being good for mental health. Whilst your right you don't have to do it some people just want to experience all the above benefits..

I was a member at our local DL, until I realised I only used it to get my car washed. I would pop in, have a Stella in the bar while they did my car, and then shoot on home. I wasn't getting fitter, despite entering the temple of fitness. I binned it off, and pay the local Poles to do the car.

that's my sort of exercise 😁

I was a member of one for a good few years. I played tennis a few times a week and squash once a week, all included in the price. The gym equipment was high standard and loads of variety in the classes in offer. The one I went to had an indoor and outdoor pool which was good. The outdoor one had a terrace, which was nice in the summer. The food was decent and the bar area nice enough that we occasionally stayed to watch the odd match after a few sets. The price was expensive in comparison to other gyms. However, like with a golf club membership, it was easy to get value for your money.

Err..whut?

From 2016: 'Brits waste a staggering £558m a year on unused gym memberships - with more than one in 10 people saying they hadn’t stepped foot inside their gym for a whole year.'
Over 60% of Americans take out a gym membership then hardly ever go.
Which makes the true cost of membership = annual cost divided by number of visits.

But one guy told me he goes every morning to the gym then comes back to eat a big breakfast because he's deserved it. Said has was only a stone overweight. I'd put it at 3 stones.

So resolve to join a gym for 2020. Relieve yourself of some cash, get some weight off and become fitter and healthier!
As for the reality:
Exercise alone does not take weight off you.
It's doesn't make you any fitter than proper outdoor activity.
What health problems does it alleviate or fix? None.

Apologies for the misspelled items you point out the joy of using a phone with automatic correction not always working. But considering that's all you can point out as being factually incorrect goes further to show your knowledge and expertise of why people use gyms is lacking.

You really are nothing more than a troll when it comes to health and fitness debates... Its easy to post one sided arguments without looking at the other side. Nobody has said exercise is the only way to lose weight but then nobody is saying people only exercise to lose weight. Some people exercise in order to gain weight, to rehab from injuries that are caused in sports they play, that they get in every day life that require physio and rehabilitation exercise , some do it to help with their mental well being, some do it for aesthetic, some do it to gain strength, others even do it for social activity with others like attending classes which is no different to you going to play a round of golf, and for the record it can help you get fitter than just doing normal outdoor activity especially for those that cannot do those type of activities you mention through disability, injury etc. Or there are people that play sports that want to improve athletic performance there are 100s of reasons people use gyms.

Plus I've already pointed out what benefits it can have the alleviate problems. But then you dismiss what others think in any of these threads to state how you're always right, as our resident expert.

It's like a modern form of the witch doctor or shaman.
The shaman gets called out. He is paid to perform a ritual and the patient gets better.
In reality, if the patient did get better it was because the body had healed itself.

Absolutely pathetic and shows you've no idea of human anatomy or how muscles work synergistically to repair the body.

Your tin foil hat needs replacing!

That's a good one. Is that a word? Thought synergy had more to do with a con man known as a personal trainer.

Mod Edit, Didnt take long to find this ----

Wow... You really are quite sad and bitter about a subject your claiming to know better about than anyone else.

Yes that is actually a word and would be used in many areas other than the human body.. Perhaps we could relate your conman back a golf pro teaching someone how to get better at golf...

If it is I can't find it.
So please provide a reference, then I'll use it myself.

Is there a correlation between personal trainers, the locality of gyms, and fast food outlets?
People didn't feel the need for the gym when obesity was uncommon, and that's not so long ago.
Some golf pros are con men. Others are good.

In this paper we present, with the help of the design problem, strategies to synergistically employ the dominance identification methods.
From Cambridge English Corpus

Now you're scraping the barrel with your absolute tripe. Personal trainers work in gyms wherever they are and there are 1000s not near fast food outlets, likewise their is a fast food outlet in every major town in the UK as there is a Gym in every major town. Is that your basis for it..

Likewise you can't answer the question as to equivalent being aimed at a golf pro as con man. Because using your own methodology you can Google how to swing a golf club so why pay a pro for their expertise.

As for your last point many people felt the desire to use a gym before the obesity crisis likewise many people still use gyms that are not obese, your only focus is to think people use gyms to lose weight which again hugely blinkered and one sided. You really are no more than a troll in all these topics and on that note there is nothing left to say to you.

Which is jargon and is as clear as mud. What are 'dominance identification methods'.

Citation please.

If people started to eat more healthily do you think we would need more gyms?

Good idea. That 30 minute private lesson condensed is more like 5 minutes. The internet is just as reliable and so much cheaper.

Yet you still fail to note people Use gyms for uses other than losing weight..

Don't need to give any citations do what you state we should all do get off your arse go for a walk and you'll see plenty.

You Sir are nothing more than a pedant and troll.

Spoke to a PP who works at DL centre today. In essence he is a self employed squash coach. He gives a couple of hours a week free, Coaching kids. DL take the brass from that.mHe pays an " Insurance " fee and is allowed to privately coach there.
He said, the facilities are first class, but you must use them 3 or four times a week to get your monies worth. If you are only going once, look elsewhere.

Cheers mate. The 3 or 4 times a week isn’t an issue to us retired folks.
