In the light of the earthquake in Haiti do you really feel its worth living in these places on earth that are in dangerous areas.would you live on a Vault line,or in a tornado path.

I don't think the population of Haiti have much of a choice, they aren't the most affluent of people. I feel sorry for them, it seems that the poorer people always have to suffer the worst of natural disasters.

I agree. If you are born with nothing then its pretty damned hard for the majority to move away from their urban decay. Poor infrastructure will always be found out in these sorts of circumstance.

Mind you if you want a dangerous area of the world to live you should try Bracknell after kicking out time on a Friday :D

It is unfortunately the way of the world, the "haves"get building regulation standard structures.paid for by corrupt practices

The "have nots" get squished because johnny builder cut the corners to make a few extra coins.

A dreadful event but if it now stimulates the sort of help Haiti has needed for 40yrs to aleviate the only 2 things its famous for -poverty and criminal violence, it may yet prove to be a turning point.

A few years back we were on holiday on Zakynthos when there was a reasonable sized quake in the vicinity. It was apparently "just a rumble" as far as the locals were concerned, but at 6.4 on the scale it sure scared the crap out of me. The locals were blase about it because they are awaiting "the big one". There was apparently a huge quake in the 50s which destroyed a lot of houses and a lot of the road infrastructure on the island.

Stoke on Trent had a murmer on 24th Dec and Llangurig in Powys has an even bigger murmer on 14th Dec, and Manchester had a wee tickle on the 27th Dec so we're not too far off fault lines ourselves.

Try Tokyo.

Japan sits on the meeting point of 3 tectonic plates and suffered one of the greatest earthquakes of modern history in 1923, when over 200,000 people were killed.

In 1923 Tokyo's population was 3m, now it is 30m. the estimated economic cost of another earthquake of the magnitude of 1923 is $7 trillion!!!
