So I play in an early Saturday morning match, in the first threesome to tee off. Hit the first three greens in regulation, but take 8 putts due to the green surfaces being a bit damp and sandy and I'm not used to them being so slow and unpredictable. Things remain pretty steady though, and after the first nine I'm 6-over, with 20 stableford points. Going well.

Couldn't have started the next nine better...lovely drive on the 10th, bit of draw, measure it to around 280 yards, dead centre of the fairway! SW to 5-feet, birdie. Hit the edge of the green on 11, 20-foot putt, birdie! Back to 4-over and 28 stableford points now. Continue well and after the 17th I've got 40 points and am 9-over. This is GREAT!

I lose my ball on the last!!

I hit an okay 2nd ball, then duff my approach. Then duff my chip. Then hit a crumby chip from the ringe and 2-putt for a 4-over eight!!! AGGGHHH!!

Still my best score ever, and I'll hopefully get cut from 16.1 to 15.8, but could've been so much better.

Tis the beauty of premature celebration and self admiration, and is the exact opposite of hitting 2 OOb on the 1st, and then playing like Sergio from then on !!

Great game eh ?

With 40 points I would imagine you to get cut 4 x 0.3 = 1.2

I don't know how it all works yet. I gather that the eight on the last might not penalise me on my handicap cut too much, but ScoreSaver suggested a 0.3 cut, so I'll just wait to see what happens. 14.9 would be great though!!

That why I stopped adding up my scores as I went round, it put way to much pressure on us mere mortals who play with handicaps

I'm in the same camp as you there HTL. I never add my score up after 9 and try my best to not keep track of it. I know if i'm playing well, and don't need the added preasure.

In the old days :p it used to be quite easy to work out your handicap reduction. 36 points would be playing to par, you scored 40 therefore 4 under par. Your a cat 3 golfer. so it would be 4 x 0.3. Not 100% sure now with the SSS and CSS all coming into it.

I did exactly the same thing in the monthly stableford last month. Came to 18 thinking a 5 would definitely be there or there abouts and a 6 net 5 would be close and maybe need countbacl to win. What do I do? Carve one OB and scramble a 7 net 6 for a point with my second ball and lose by a point

I totally agree that I'd rather blob the last hole than the first, however I think it takes more courage/guts/fight/resolve (whatever you want to call it) to blob the first hole then par and birdie your way round the next 17 holes than it takes to hit a closing par up the 18th. For that reason I never feel much pressure going up 18...I'm always thinking "How can I birdie this?" :)
