Watching the tribute to the Dambusters raid on BBC 2. Brilliant. The Lancaster flew over Royal Ascot several times last Sunday clearly on a training/maintenance flight. Was so low and the engine noise was so evocative. Funny enough I played the two holes after it flew over each time really well.

I love programmes like this. We should never allow events like this and indeed the first world war to be forgotten even though it is now outside most peoples memory or lifetime

have we paid the debt of rebuilding the german industries after the war yet.i always feel a tinge of sadness when i see the graves on tv of the hundreds of thousands of very young men of all sides that died in the wars,a quick pub quiz question for you who gave the order to uses the first aerial uses of chemical weapons, killing hundreds of innocent villagers.

My father was a spitfire pilot, and did a lot of hours on photographic reconnaissance over Germany. Brings a lump to my throat when I think how brave the countless number of men and women were, fighting for their country. They should never be forgotten.

Dad was in the RAF in the war and I loved the film as a kid and read the Paul Brickhill book as well as others about the raid since then.

The thing that always gets me is that after dropping his bomb, and seeing how heavy the flak was, Gibson went round again to draw the flak as the other Lancs made their runs. Not in the plan so far as I am aware just sheer leadership and bravery of a kind that it is hard to imagine, and he was only 24.

I lived in Soest (not far from the Mohne) for a while in the early 90's and often walked in the area of the dam. You can clearly see the repair to the stonework - it was some chunk of masonry that they blew out of it!

Not sure a quick google search didn't help that much, then again I didn't look that hard, but I'd guess at either the British or Germans during WW1 or the Americans during Vietnam?

I saw an interview with the pilot who flew the Lancaster over the Derwent Dam yesterday.

He said he was flying at 200ft above the water and it wasn't easy. He said "You're working hard for sure"

He then said that when they did the bombing run during WWII, they did their run at 60ft above the water, and at night! while under heavy fire.

That takes skill!!! ...... And plenty of bottle too

I have something in the back of my mind telling me it was Francisco Franco!

No idea why!

Obviously I am much younger than Homer, so dont have much recollection on WW1.

Was reading about the science behind the how the dambusters worked... the simplicity of the idea and the audacity of the execution is simply mindblowing. I struggle to think if such a thing will ever get approved in this day and age. We probably drown in 'consultation'.

Reading about the 'backspin' the DBs were creating, made me wonder that it is the same concept of the golf ball and should make the ball escape a water hazard. the only difference is the DB and the golf ball is the angle of attack. Generally the angle of entry of the ball is way to high, so they sink without a trace... except the ritual skipping of the ball at the Masters..

The film is not entirely 'factual'... As much of what actually happened, with regard the mission, was still covered by the official secrets act at the time the film was made...

Like the bomb was shown as being spherical when it was actually cylinderical...

Still a great film though...

Still talk of a re-make in the pipeline...

It will be remade by Hollywood and we will finally learn that it was in fact the Americans that did it - starring Mel Gibson - coming to a screen near you soon..................
