Evening fella's...

Im in the hunt for a new dog as i lost my 13 yr old Boxer to cancer a few weeks ago....Iv had boxers for years and im looking for a change....
My reasoning for the boxers was purely temperment as well as their guarding abilities as i have a young family the dog would have to be tolerant of kids but if called on for protection would duly oblidge....

Anyway im very strongly thinkinng of buying a Dogue De Bordeaux (French Mastiff) and i was just wondering does anybody on here have any experience of them or know of friends who have had them...

From reading the breed description they seem to meet everything that im looking for and more...

Cheers Mike.

Sorry to hear about your Boxer Kid :(

Just back from walking mine, hes a rescue dog (licquorice allsorts lol) and mad as a hatter but keeps me sane! Good luck in finding a new one but dont disregard rehoming from a dogs home

A friend of mine had one a few years back. Lovely dog an all that, but a serious "drool" problem. The stuff got everywhere. The whole house stunk of it, it was horrendous.

For a good guard dog plus child friendlyness, look no further than a Dobermann bitch. Male Dobermanns will only obey one master, but bitches are far more cooperative and are famed for their fiercly protective nature where kids are. Their tolerance levels have baffled dog lovers all over the world for years. Thats the reason i had one many years ago. It was absolutely uncanny how she'd follow the kids into the garden and sit 5 yards away from where they played, and would'nt budge until they came in. We had a front door that had a full length glass panel, and she would go ape *** jumping up at it because she could see the size of them and knew it was an adult, but if it was one of the neighbours kids they could stick their hands through the letter box and she'd lick'em. Added to that, they hardly molt anything. Absolutely lovely dogs.

I'm sorr for your loss fella.
I'm expecting the same fairly soon as our dog was a rescue dog & we've had him for over 15 years now!
He's a Jack Russell & I cannot recommend them highly enough.
He's fantastic with kids & is not one of the yappy ones.
What is great is that he will let NO stranger into the house. If the stranger is shown in by either myself or Mrs. Slime, then that's fine. Once let in by either of us, the visitor is then accepted by our dog, seemingly forever.
Mates & family who have been introduced to our dog can now enter the house at any time, through any door only to be met by a mad Jack Russell who is almost wagging his tail right off!
A JR is a truly great dog, and sooooo much character too.

Slime.

Cheers for the replies fella's....Fundy you'll have plenty of stories about your boxer mate....Theyt get up to all sorts in more ways than one....Definately pub ammo on a night out ;)

Slime.....Iv had jack russels as a kid and to be fair they are good dogs but a little on the aggressive side....There a great little watch dog also...But they are prone to personality problems too and iv had my run ins with them....

Also its a big dog breed im after as the area i live in is a council estate and has wll manner of heads going up and down the road....
I grew up here but it has changed so much since i was a kid its not even funny.

Dobie bitch +1

French Mastifs are rididled with hereditary health conditions, add to this the huge rise in popularity of the breed, and its hard to find a well bred dog.
Any breed of dog will behave a certain way if encouraged/trained,but i'd never encourage a dog to be overly protective, especially with children.Quite a large percentage of dog attacks on children are caused when a family dog over reacts to children being boisterous with one another when playing.
I have 3 dogs,2 terriers and a lurcher, and as a child we always had dogs as my father bred colliexgreyhound lurchers, but our dogs were always worked,so not really pets.
Research some breeds on Google, and if and when you decide to get a dog, find a reputable owner and speak in depth about the breed.
Best of luck.

Cheers mate.

Staffordshire bull terrier had mine 3 year now from 6 week old the daughter is 2 and she can do anything to him not a murmur he loves going into her room while she is playing n just lays there I will always have staffs nothing else

Newfoundland, once you've owned a newfey everything else is just a dog.

They are the nannies of the dog world, ask peter Pan

if you have the time to exercise then by far a collie, amazing obedience, loving and also protective without being aggressive

also dont rule out a staff, yes they are renowned for being a chav dog but they are also known as a nanny dog as they are amazing with kids. A friend is a breeder and his male is massive but soft as ***, I wouldnt want to break into his house though!

Sorry to hear about your boxer, I had to have our collie put down aged 14 years and I cried like a baby in the vets :(

We're a collie household. Really intelligent, very trainable and exceptionally satisfying to have in the household - but you do need to exercise them physically (at least 2 hours a day) and mentally. They are very bright and will get bored if you don't give them the stimulation and then they can get destructive. Wouldn't recommend them unless you have access to open spaces and are prepared to put the work in with them. On the plus side, if you want to practice your chipping and pitching they are very good at collecting your balls.

Hi Kid and sorry for your loss. Bet you can`t guess what I`ve got? Oh, was it that easy:o Not at all protective, but large enough and soft as butter. Not an aggressive bone in their bodies, unless you are a small furry anything:D

Mine is a retired racer and if you go down that route they come to you as machines that develop themselves around your personality. Brilliant with kids and so clean.

Good luck with your search, and whatever you get it will be going to a good home.

im a boxer guy, bought my first boxer as a gift for my mum nearly 9yrs ago sadly logan passed away a few months back, its very hard and can understand the loss you have

i have pancho now for 2yrs, an boxer rescue, and a total loon, but perfect in every way with the kids i have a 6yo daughter and a 1yo son, he sleeps upstairs with us, and will sleep on the end of my daughters bed when she lets him, my son can be all over him and nothing just wag of the tail,

if the door goes he barks, no-one is getting into our house without us knowing about it, he is fantastic dog all round!

There is a guy I am great friends with. His Male is Irish Champion, International Champion and won Crufts in 2010 out of 140 entries. He is 6 years old this year and still going strong.

He has zero health problems and I have seen him running and playing for hours on end and not get tired. Seen a daughter of him cat leap from sitting up about 2 feet off the ground. I have pics on my photo bucket I think.

He goes with a girl somewhere in the ROI and has just had a litter. Very serious guy when it comes to breeding and won't breed unhealthy bitches to his male or buy any himself.

I can give you his number if you want and maybe meet up with him. Just PM me.

We're a terrier family.
My little brother has a 7 month baby girl, About a month before she was born he rehomed a little terrier from the local rescue place. They havent had a single issue, nothing phases the little thing. She gets pulled from everyend and just happily takes it.
I've got a little Jack russel terrier cross and my dad has a patterdale terrier cross, both are perfect with his baby girl.
I'm a terrier fan for life.
