Custom fit with intent to buy booked.

Wahoo, I have a custom fitting with my local Mizuno custom fit center booked for Monday morning. I will only be able to buy my first three irons of the six I would like but I have struck a deal with the guy to come back and get the other three at another time. This is down to money and impatience, I am very excited.

I had in my mind that I would get PW-9I-8I to keep some continuity in my bag so that my short irons would be the new ones and my longer irons would be my old Wilsons, is that the way you guys would do it? My mother in law called me on it and said she would get her favorite irons no matter the order. I would like the 7 iron really; depending on the weather all out par 3s need a 7 iron on occasion. Anyhow, how would you do it?

In my mind I am coming home with MP-53s and also in my mind I may get MP-53s from PW-7I and JPX Pro 6 and 5 Iron. What is in my mind is usually what happens but I must stay open to what I am advised. I am most looking forward to getting a good shaft in my irons though.

I will keep you updates. I am like a kid at Christmas…. New irons(a few) after 6 years and fitted!!!

Alex

Nice one. Where are you going?

Why not get 7,8,9 and leave your wedges are they are for now. If you reckon on using a 7 often then I'd get it.

Definitely keep an open mind - a mix'n'match set sounds a good idea.

Have fun and remember to try to relax. The fitter will have seen every bad shot in the book - except some of the sh**ks Murph hits maybe - so don't worry if you hit a stinker.

I would go wedge, 8 and 7 and just leave the current 9 iron out of the bag. I find a soft 8 or hard wedge tends to fill the gap and my PW is probably the most used club in my bag, especially around the green.

There are quite a few postings on here as a result of my fitting at Mizuno's a week ago. You might like to read those. I would let them tell you what to have and then sit back and think through everything before you order. I had a club mocked up in the setup they recommended and hit loads of balls at my local range. I decided not to buy Mizuno in the end and have ordered Titleist.

The Mizuno fitting was at their regional centre in New Malden but I am not so sure that they got everything right and I could have ended up with the wrong set up if I hadn't checked everything and blindly ordered

Best wishes

Chris

I have not missed a word of your posts chris. I have already been fitted before, this is round two with a different fitter so I feel good that I will know which way is up. You ended up with AP2`s did you not?

Alex,

Can I ask why you're not getting fitted at the Oxford Fitting Centre since you must have been there at some point to get the recommendation?

Is it because of where you live?

I only ask as I will use the Oxford place when I eventually get myself a custom fitted driver (Birthday in April more than likely) as it's the closest place to me (Gloucester)

I was fitted at Oxford by Marc - quality time I had too. Very good service and a good range too.
Al - I see Ainsworth's doesn't have a range, just an indoor mat etc etc.
I'd prefer to be at least on a range like Oxford. Still - have fun

personally i would wait until funds were there for the complete set. I couldnt think of anythink worse than having half a custom fitted set and half non fitted, effectively like having half a wrong set.

everything will feel different between shots... sod that!

I've obviously missed a trick here. Why are you buying just three irons? Is it a cost thing. Does it work out cheaper that way? I'd have thought a full set would be the cheaper option

Dazed and confused of old Bracknell Town :D

Mizuno & Ping allow you to buy irons individually. Their normal cost is per iron. Been there and done it before in a 5-PW set.

I am waiting on their arrival Alex

You are clearly clued up and I am sure that you will get what you need. I did ask a pro about a mix and match setup (MP53 and JPX800 PRO) and he said that the only problem would arise on resale, but, my view is that the two types of club are very different at address and that would put me off

Go in with an open mind and choose the irons that work best. The 53s are a great club and you will probably be fine with just getting those, so long as you get shaft selection right, which is a bigger issue than head design.

Yep, thanks, this is just what I am thinking, will be interesting to see if I am offerd the same shafts as last time.

@Homer, Money is the issue, I can not buy a full set now and if I try and save the money HID will spend it for me or it will go on a bill. We are not well off and its just the way it is. If I make a start there will be a conclusion, so its not a trick its just what it is. Also only 6 iron wanted pw-5I, I use hybrids after that.

Hi mate, I have not actualy been there, I phoned up and chatted to them about the fitting center I was thinking of using. The guy at Oxford said that the guy I am going to see is really good at what he does and highly recomeded him. I then talked to the guy at Tring fitting center and he gave me a really good price, better than anyone elce.

Just a thought regarding having your set made up of 2 different brands.

I know it's only until you can get the other 3, but aren't Wilson irons a lot stronger lofted than Mizuno's?

If you get short irons first you will have a bigger yardage gap where they change brand, or if you go longer irons first you could end up with 2 clubs with the same loft, although one will be called a 7 and the other an 8.

I would wait until u have the money for the whole set for the exact same reason as region. It won't be that long to wait and the weather is crap at the moment anyway. You could even sell your wilsons

Good point gents and not something i have thought about. As it happends Mizuno have made there lofts stronger to stay in line with the current crop of lofts with these new irons so I dont think it will be a problem.

I am happy to buy this way as it really is the only way I can. Its complicated but it will work out.

I'm currently awaiting delivery of my irons after a fitting. To be absolutely sure I got the right service I actually got fitted 3 times in total (and at 3 different locations) to make sure there will be no doubt as to whether the fitting is right for me. My theory is that with golf being one of the most mentally based games around, you need to be 100% sure of everything you do/buy.

Clubs expected to be ready just after Christmas so I can't wait for them to land (TM burners for me, the clubs I got on best with over the 3 trials). I actually went into the process wanting the JPXpros to be my ideal club, but it just wasn't to be. That would be my only other piece of advise, go into the process with an open mind otherwise you may be dissapointed when the clubs you want are not actually the best clubs for you.
