was wondering do we spend too much time worrying what our swing looks like rather then the end product. take jb holmes....his swing looks so so rough yet obviously he can play and i persume if i had a swing like that (as a novice) and went to a pro he would totally dismantle it and start me from scratch......any thoughts?

most good pros will work with what comes naturally to each person,i think a persons swing needs to work and look half decent its all about being repeatable,my swing aint that great i swing upright then drop inside kind of a sergio move but works for me

A good pro wouldn't ,doesn't matter how you swing as long as the club returns square to the ball.

JB's swing aint pretty by any means but I'd take it right now! In fact the next time I top one 10 yards in front of myself and the devil appears I'll just ask where to sign!

JB's got plenty more issues than his ugly swing, the 7 hour rounds for a start

For a strange swing step forward Kenny Perry!

It goes against all that is correct with a golf swing. Crouched stance, stands up at the top of his backswing....It doesn't look pretty but it works for him.

working with what someone had is exactly what Jim Furyks dad did- not a bad result by any means! Some pros definitely do go for the text book swing though, particularly with younger people but for young new starters I would agree with this method. I would hate watching my swing on camera if I was like one of the aforementioned, but I would take that if it meant great results.

I agree totally with all the comments suggesting that you have to make it work for you, however if you look at all the swings quoted there is one or two critical points which have to be met no matter how you swing such as clubhead square at impact and sufficient club head speed.

I like watching Jim Furyks on slo mo I just can't get my head around how he does it.

I have no idea what my swing looks like, but at times it works reasonably effectively. I know I have a couple of problems with it, not least being the habit of collapsing the right knee at the start of the swing. so if anyone has a sure fire cure for this . .

try standing on the balls of your feet or put a golf ball under the outside of the right foot, will help focus your attention and not collapse the knee,

other than that plaster of paris :0)

In fact it is unnatural for the body to do this unusual dance with a big stick, its not all that good for us in reality unless your body feels ok doing it.Young kids can be moulded into the text book swing, its bad for older people to do anything that the body doesnt feel comfortable with.
If any pro tried to mould an adult into text book stuff when they are just starting the game, that pro would deserve a slap.
