ok good people, am heading to woolacombe in the middle of july for a couple of weeks. ive not definately decided to take the clubs yet, might concentrate on surfing!!! if i do take the clubs, does anyone have any recommendations for a decent scenic knock. im not looking for anything too challenging, just a decent enjoyable 18 holes in the sun (hopefully) with some nice views...
thanks in advance.......

Hi Danny my neck of the woods,i was born in Ilfracombe which is five miles from woolacombe.
Its a fantastic area and woolacombe is great, have you been before?make sure you have a beer in the Red barn at night as the suns going down, beautiful.
As for courses there are 3 i recomend, firstly Twitchen golf course is opposite the camp site, quite short but quite easy and ideal for a quick round.
Secondly libbaton golf course, used to be 9 but about 3 years ago extended to 18,lots of water and a good test.
And finally Ilfracombe,i absolutely love this course, one of the best kept in the westcountry[i would love to have a forum meet there] a true test especially if the winds blowing and the scenery and veiws are amazing,an absolute must as your only a short trek away.

cheers PJ. Was just looking at Ilfracombe and it looks fantastic. I think im gonna have to take the clubs as I wouldnt want to get there, look at the courses and regret leaving them at home.. Looks like its going to be a good fortnight. am up for a mini meet if a few people are interested. Short notice I know, but he who dares Rodney, he who dares...

Recommend strongly you play at Saunton. Two fantastic courses ,especially the East. Both ranked in top 50 or so English courses, and i never tire of playing them. More expensive than most in the area, but they are top quality, and compared to other top 50 courses good value.

Yes, the two courses at Saunton are exceptional.

I played both East and West courses at Saunton and Royal North Devon an couple of weeks ago. All three were excellent. I liked the East course the most but would not turn down the chance to play any of them again.

+1 for RND across the estuary in Westward Ho its a cracking course. It has the best run of links holes I've played (3-8)

I've not played Saunton, but I'm going down there in Sept/Oct to have a crack.

Haha! Guess where i play!
if you come to RND you will hopefully get the friendliest welcome! The course is always hard and fast like a proper Links, and you can checkout the museum and stuff, always fun to see a first timers face when they walk into the bar! - for me the greens at Saunton are a little too soft and green and not true links but it is in good nick at the moment.
I also like Woolacombe and Mortehoe GC, which is right on your doorstep and cheap and cheerful.
Have fun !

cheers guys, am looking forward to it now... ilfracombe looks nice and Saunton should give me a bit of links golf, and something to compare Lytham and Birkdale to.. Will give RND a try too in the 2nd week. gonna have to do something special for the mrs to make sure I can get out a few times....

I would take the offer of playing RND up.

Played it last year on a twilight offer ( £25 i think)

Its a great links course and some ways quite unique,Although it shares many of the traits of a typical flat links layout eg hard fast running fairways etc. What makes it difficult is the sea grass. The stuff is deadly to golf balls and normally a lost ball unless you fancy a few spikes in you! added to that a horse or sheep might get in the way of your shot!

Great place to play golf if you enjoy links type courses!
