Hi all

we are having a trip to st mellion next year and are looking for another decent course to play on the 2nd day,

needs to be in a reasonable proximity, any ideas greatly appreciated.

cheers

Scott

Are you playing both courses at St Mellion? The other option is to play somewhere on your way home, which direction will you be headed?

A mate of mine played st mellion last month the Nicklaus course and it took 5 hr 45 they were a 2 ball and were behind 3 groups of females but the marshals did nothing to speed up play or ask them to let the 2 ball through.he said the course was full of complete hackers and stag do parties. He played the Kernow the next day and really enjoyed it. I play it in a society day in May. We all had buggies but still took 5 hours.but the Kernow was a lot better. Hope you have a faster round.

I preferred the Kernow TBH, the Nicklaus was ridiculous. They stipulate it takes 5 hours to get around there

Crazy. The Kernow is average at best. So many awful holes.

The Nicklaus course is a supreme test of golf.

I didn't say the Kernow was a good course, only the fact I preferred it over the Nicklaus.

The Nicklaus was far too gimmicky IMHO. Some nice holes, but far to penal and felt like a slog.

When down that way I always make a point of playing Launceston GC. It never gets a mention, never appears on anyone's "must play" list but I think it's a cracking golf course. Always in good nick, a good variety of holes, members are very welcoming, food in the clubhouse is very good and reasonably priced and I've picked up plenty of bargains to be in the pro shop. £30 a round midweek, £25 if you've got a County Card.

I'm with MendieGK, you will be very disappointed playing the Kernow after the Nicklaus. The Kernow feels like it was shoe horned into the space they had remaining after building the Nicklaus. The Nicklaus on the other hand is awesome, It's not long but it's a real test of course management (3 iron of most tee's is the way forward)

Have a look at China Fleet if you want something really close, Nice course and not expensive.

The Kernow is the original course, the European Tour played on it back in the day, the current 18th on the Nicklaus was the original 18th.

Agree with some other sentiments about the Nicklaus course, it's very difficult, a very strong test of golf, but not what I would ever describe as enjoyable, I've always just found it a slog.

100% agree with Launceston and then China Fleet (in that order) for additional options.

Agree that the Kernow was spoilt when they built the Nicklaus. Have to say the Nicklaus is a fine and very tough (well for me every time I've played) course but it's so slow all of the time. Loads of great courses near so you won't have to travel too far in any direction. Enjoy
