Countback is a b*tch!

Had our Club Championship and Handicap Salver this weekend. 18 holes yesterday and 18 today. Managed to pull back a nett 70 (par 70) after a nightmare opening hole 9 yesterday and then managed a nett 67 today.

Lost the handicap competition on countback! Ended up 2nd.

Ah well, atleast I got another cut. Not sure what to exactly yet as I haven't seen the CSS, but I would imagine I'll be off 24 now.

It's just slightly annoying, as the main competition has a playoff in the event of a tie, and due to it's nature, it's only really competed for by about 6 or 8 people. The whole club compete in the handicap competition, so why can't there be a playoff for that too? I just feel a bit robbed, whereas if I'd lost in a playoff then I would feel a tad better about it!

The worst of it is that it goes on your back nine. I shot the front nine of my life yesterday (7 over gross) but fell away on the back nine and shot a 52. The other guy did the exact opposite and had a nightmare first 9 and a great second nine. Why should that make him any more deserving of a win?

Sorry to moan, but it seems like a bit of a wonky system to me!

Simple logistics really. Is every single person who plays in a monthly medal supposed to hang around until the very last person finishes, just to see if there is a tie and then have a play-off?

You do it in scratch club championships because play is usually in reverse order of scores with the best players and those in contention going out last.

So countback is the best option out there I am afraid.

Always hate thinking to myself if had not have rushed that putt or something i would have a point more..

Tho its all good, sometimes you will win on count back thats a great feeling.. I got a second spot with our society on count back last sunday, was the differance between 15 quid and 40 quid.. and i only hit 35 points lol.

Yesterday I came 3rd in a comp'.
Places 2 through to 5 all scored the same nett score.
I played at 11.40am one of the others played at 2.30pm.
Should I have waited for him to get in and then have a playoff among the 4 of us?
As Paul Stewart says it's just logistically more sensible to use count back.

They were even considering using it for the final Open spot from Loch Lomand. Aparently if Clarke & Jacqualin (sp?) were tied Clarke would have lost the spot due to having the worst final round.

You could argue that after walking 9 holes in that heat. to hold it together in the back 9 the other guy would have been a better player, but often peoples front nine is always the better.

Id rather see something like most consistant score:

One with least blobs (if equal)
one with least one Pointers (if equal)
one with least Two Pointers (if equal)
one with least Three Pointers (if equal)

this would prove more consitant scoring, not scoring 1,4,3,2,2, but scoring 2,2,2,2,3 for example.

I suppose countback is best as you say due to logistics, I guess I'm just a bit disappointed to lose by such a small margin in the biggest competition of the year (well, biggest handicap comp at least).

Ah well, I'm down to 24.3 now and there's always next year!

Annoyingly, shot a round today that would have won me it yesterday! Bet that happens to a lot of us though!

Countback always seems an odd method to me, why should playing well on the back 9 be any more important than playing well on the front?

Personally I think the lowest gross score should win in case of a tie on Nett or Pts as that person has clearly played the best golf and the player who plays the best golf should win. This however would always favour the lower handicapper and is a contentious issue with which I know many people don't share my view.
