So here I am, sat pondering the year's golf, and to be honest, I'm not sure whether to be pleased or not.....

I started the year on the tantalising H/C of 9.5, after reaching Single stats finally (9.2) last year, at the mature age of 47.
Hey ho, I thought, the onslaught to get back down can start in April.

Cue 2010, and after a slow start to the year, where the first few Medals brought me .1 back on each occasion, to 9.9, I then played the whole summer in very consistent fashion, coming back down to 9.5, before sneaking back to 9.8.
Quite a few rounds have 'snatched defeat from the jaws of victory' and ended on Nett 69 CSS, so exactly to HC, but equally, I had a few rounds where I 'had no right' to make buffer, but did !

All in all, I know I'm capable of shooting under, and know I can make 9 again, or even 8 perhaps, but equally, I also know just how hard it is to play to Single's week after week.

I won one of the Club's Matchplay events too, so overall, I guess a year of consistency should be satisfying.

What would YOU rather have ?
A year of consistent golf........or a year of wildly fluctuation performances, but leaving you ever so slightly lower HC than last year ?

A mate of mine has been off 4/5 for years but had never shot under par gross until this year. It had always bugged him and although he's by far the better golfer than me in terms of consistency I'd done this twice and he was really envious of that (which made me feel good :D). I'd rather have the memories of the great rounds than the satisfaction of feeling I am dead steady to be honest. Would be even nicer to be have both though !

I was in a similar boat until recently when I threw some good rounds in. Now i'm relatively safe at 8.2, I know I can go lower. Being steady can indicate you've reached your plateau and maybe that's as good as it.gets.
I think I'd rather be up'n'down, scoring well then having to struggle for a while, knowing that I can still go lower.

It's not that I'm mega steady, just perhaps more that i've found how to keep a score going to an extent.
However, with a 3 over gross front nine on Saturday, my final score should have been better, - 2 doubles in particular wrecking it.

Last week however, I was 9 over gross after 6, only to play +3 for the next 12 to make buffer !!!!

Good practice makes you more consistent so 'fluctuations in consistency' shouldn't be an issue, if they are then you know where you should be more often.

(....on the practice ground)

I'd like a year of consistent golf... under par every round would be nice, it's not going to happen unless I follow my own advice (...see above) :D

I've had consistent years and wildly fluctuating ones. I think I prefer consistency so long as it is around my h'cap. That generally makes me feel like I'm playing "better" than when I'm up and down.

Also, when I am inconsistent, although the good rounds give me a high, the bad ones can be very painful.

Having said all that, I know I'm as jealous as hell when someone who usually shoots higher than me suddenly pulls out a good round and beats my PB.

If I were you Macster, I'd be well pleased with your year. Consistent golf and a trophy. Best of both worlds if you ask me. Well done. :)

Ive never played consistently in a whole year before so you would think i would like that but i love playing golf the way i do :o. Fair enough you'll have ups and downs but your rounds change every time you play, instead of being in the fairways and greens in regulation which to me is boring

This is the first year since i was a kid, that i have had a consistent year, with flashes of excellence. Only had four 0.1 rises, the last one being when i had to stop after 4 holes with my bad back :( :( Just hope i have got another similar year in me back permitting, and that it is not all downhill from here :D

I will settle for consistency now i have got back to single figures.

I've been consistantly inconsistant this year. I have usually managed to play 15 or 16 reasonable holes in competitive play and then thrown in a couple of shockers from nowhere to ruin everything.

I've always been a bit of a streaky player and when I do get on a roll I can be very good. Sadly these are so far apart and usually short lived. I guess I'm going to have to settle for flashes of excellence to galvanise any handicap cuts.

This year, two rounds of 46 points, a few level par net and quite a few 5 over the handicap - or + another 5! haha.

I think I mentioned before that flashes of proper golf is better than steady eddie who just treads water.

On my track of sss65 and par 70 I've shot 46, 44, 42 points and a net 61, 62. The last couple of months I am playing around my handicap, I started a thread hoping to get out of the rut and shot a net 76, boy I am now glad to play around my handicap.

Wish I had found this steady form at the beginning of the season but glad to take it into next (fingers crossed).

Consistency.

For some it will be getting 50% pars. For others it will be not getting any 8's or worse on the card.

Consistently getting 8's is not good.

I'd want to be consistently as good as I know I can be. I can do it a few times a round, so why not the rest? Though given the choice, I'd still want the flashes of brilliance. After all. It's those that keep us wanting to achieve even greater things.

To be consistent, and never show any signs of what could be. Then it'll be time to quit!

I would much rather veer from the mercurial to the horrendous than plod along like a middle of the road bed wetter!

If life was always consistent it would be unswervingly dull!

Just my humble opinion...

Snelly.

Give me consistency all day long......
The story of my 1st ever season goes like this........
Started off with a handicap of 21.....
Iv played 19 comps.....
12 of these have been stablefords.....3 in the buffer
42 points in 1 for a cut
38 points in 1 for a cut
7 0.1's back......
The other 7 have been stroke play medals..... Of these iv shot a gross 88 (nett 70) when the course had a CSS of 72
Iv shot a gross 84 (nett 67) in another
Iv shot a gross 83 (nett 65) in another

That leaves 4 0.1's back again.......

Id say that our handicap secretary cant get his head round my inconsistency's.
I hope i can get some consistency next season as that will be my aim.......What i dont want to be labelled is a bandit as i have entered every competition bar matchplay events.....Which in time i will......

I would give you 30% of my household income to play consistently to 9!

Having said that I have not asked the wife, but if you can make it happen i will try to too.

:D
